@Ruprecht, all fun and games aside, what needs to happen to get our social circle re-stickied in the WR? Can we simply rebrand it (i.e. shitcan the word lounge and adopt no-flaming rules) and we're good to go? More? Less?

It's not up to me, and I believe it's still under discussion. The rules are less important than their intended effect though.

I usually focus on ideas, social norms and trends. Social norms usually end up dictating internal policy after all. Besides, I'm just fascinated by what makes people tick. How culture wars turn out also has an effect on foreign policy as well. The problem is that even the arena of ideas have been taken over by identity politics and seemingly all people want to do lately is point fingers instead of look for solutions. Yeah, frustrating.

Not picking a fight with you or anything, but "nice" is a terrible way to evaluate people. Don't think for a minute he wouldn't have turned vindictive or ugly with you if that would have served his needs or provided him with a leg up in conversation.

You grew up reading the same poison (sorry, as an iron curtain kid being an ass about communism is ingrained) as him and our political leaning test are quite different. Yet we're both consciously making the choice to have an honest and charitable conversation. That was a total crapshoot with him as he wasn't coming from an earnest place nor looking for understanding from what I saw. Just wanted to assert himself. And, well, fuck all that, to put it delicately. :)

Anyways, I'm done with kicking the man while he's down, so gonna back out of the Trots conversation.
Well maybe nice is the wrong word but I certainly think that people who are kind are better than people who are cruel. Now, to be clear I think other people are saying Trotsky was cruel to them and I accept that. But I don't agree that it's silly to judge people based on how they treat you.

Even if it starts out as, "this group is being prevented from full participation in society and this is what needs to change to fix that", I've yet to see identity politics fail to turn into, "My group is being prevented from full participation in society, and it's that groups fault!".

It's probably more the second thing (the gimmick account) than the first (the scent-losing). I don't recall Trots making frivolous accusations of racism or playing up blackness after his initial lie about it. I think it was something brought up much more by others, and he was probably embarrassed about having said it as his second account kind of morphed into his more authentic self.

Sure. Gimmick flaming account that turned serious.
No way it was his paranoid cover for his information though, or he'd have changed what he said about things like his job, his location, his religion, his history of residence etc etc.
Likewise his statement about supposedly going to say he was Muslim.

I usually focus on agriculture, aerospace, defense, energy, industrial tech, science and how they intersect with geopolitics and history.

You can't offer an insight on these ongoing discussions?

How about, as POTWR, I get my sticky thread making powers back that I've been unduly deprived of and I create threads for general discussion and no flaming? Seems like a nice workaround.

Actually so far I think I'm the only one that's signed off on the no flaming idea.

I get that and read your threads. They're informative and usually have some entertainment value as well. I'm a better person for having read your contributions and I think that's high praise.

Well fuck, if that ain't the problem what is? I mean, if it's the dudes bitching at each other than mods should own that one. You invited all the thread derailing arguments to come to the Lounge thread. Shocking that would add to the negativity there.;)

The OT suggestion would be awful and I definitely would not participate in that. I don't feel like getting called an F-bomb in every other post and it does absolutely nothing for me whatsoever to read that garbage. The place is dead for a reason.
