I usually focus on ideas, social norms and trends. Social norms usually end up dictating internal policy after all. Besides, I'm just fascinated by what makes people tick. How culture wars turn out also has an effect on foreign policy as well. The problem is that even the arena of ideas have been taken over by identity politics and seemingly all people want to do lately is point fingers instead of look for solutions. Yeah, frustrating.
Not picking a fight with you or anything, but "nice" is a terrible way to evaluate people. Don't think for a minute he wouldn't have turned vindictive or ugly with you if that would have served his needs or provided him with a leg up in conversation.
You grew up reading the same poison (sorry, as an iron curtain kid being an ass about communism is ingrained) as him and our political leaning test are quite different. Yet we're both consciously making the choice to have an honest and charitable conversation. That was a total crapshoot with him as he wasn't coming from an earnest place nor looking for understanding from what I saw. Just wanted to assert himself. And, well, fuck all that, to put it delicately.
Anyways, I'm done with kicking the man while he's down, so gonna back out of the Trots conversation.
