So vaccinated people are protected for severe illness but can catch and spread Delta.

Thats why vaccinated people must wear masks, to protect the unvaccinated people who arent protected from severe illness.

If 100% of the population got vaccinated, then we'd be free to catch and spread since we are 98% protected

Yeah i think so; there are too many factors against complete eradication now. However, I think we should be careful not to rely too much on the high variability of seasonal flu as a predictor of the future of covid; there are some distinctions between the two that suggest different outlooks. Hopefully the vaccines will give still give most people good protection against serious illness, and boosters for those most vulnerable (considering what the disease can do). We will be in a better position to assess the future threat of variants once we have got a lid on the pandemic and got some control over the worldwide spread; that should really be the focus just now.

i know this is a troll account/post, but in case anyone's unaware, rand paul is a medical doctor (ophthalmologist) who received his medical degree from duke.
