Who is the greatest karate man that has ever fought in the UFC?

The closest to karate used by a great Fighter is Thompson without of doubts

Agree he is a great character in that movie. Even tho he is not there for long he really adds to the atmosphere.

This is God like level acting here...doesnt even seem like acting ..its like ur watching two people talk...when he mentions the Colosseum ...to this day i get hyped/chills...as a martial artist myself and being italian this pulls at my heart strings...the old warrior/prize fighter reminiscing on the glory days...

Great scene really. Nice catch. That character/actor really is probably a big part of the heavyness of the movie. Have a vague memory i liked the part around that scene most in the movie. Great actor and probably underrated addition of that movies greatness

Lol I forgot all about that guy.

I was going to say Fred Ettish. He was the laughing stock of the early NHB years, but came back 15 years after his UFC embarrassment and won an MMA fight. There was a good Sherdog article about him, too--he had a tough life IIRC. Still, he looks like he graduated from the Karate Kid tournaments here and is ready to settle the score.

I've always wondered if when he stutters or mispeaks it was acting or an actual accident that worked to push that scene to a whole 'nother level.

How are all these people putting WB over Machida?

Thats how you know your witnessing greatness..u cant tell

They didn't strike? Damn, that's news to me. Unless, you think that karate is just deep stances and kata?
there are even some grappling techniques in karate, GSP definitely used a lot of wrestling to get wins but undoubtedly showed great karate on the way.

I love Lyoto but Wonderboy is so much better especially going forward. People figured out you could wait and counter Lyoto's counters and it made him very beatable. Nobody has figured Wonderboy out. You either hit him with a huge shot in an exchange that hurts him or he dominates.

Not to mention WB is fighting in a ridiculously tough weight class compared to Lyoto. Look at what Jon did to Lyoto's era LHWs, how easily he destroyed each one of them yeah that's not happening in today's WW class.

I have to disagree here. Yes, Shogun KO'd Machida in their second fight and Jones subbed him (Jones-Machida Round 1 was very competitive and this was Jones' absolute prime). Rampage and Phil Davis beat Machida in borderline robbery decisions, IMO. Both used pressure (Rampage-holding him against the cage, Davis-wrestling) and neither outstruck him. A past-his-prime Machida beat Mousasi and even a 41-year old Machida went to a SD with Mousasi not long ago. Machida did pretty well in his late 30s at MW but his style is very dependent on speed/reflexes which diminish with age. But I don't think his style was easily figured out or countered...especially in when Lyoto was in his early 30s.

Also, the LHW had lots of talent and fighters of various styles in Machida's prime. Jones, Rashad, Rampage, Shogun, Forrest, Thiago Silva, even Tito was still pretty good when Lyoto fought him.

I am not hating on the great Lyoto Machida this I assure you. One of my absolute favorite fighters of all time. I believe Wonderboy Thompson is just that good. For whatever reason he hasn't captured the hearts of sherdoggers like Lyoto did maybe because he doesn't have as many 1 shot KOs? The main difference as I mention is WB's ability to be effective going forward. If Lyoto's opponents decided they were going to be patient and counter Lyoto's counters Lyoto had a very hard time adjusting and being effective. If somebody tries to counter WBs counters like that he presses forward with side kicks to body and the best footwork in MMA history. (Seriously People that are fighters underappreciate his footwork, let alone the average fan)

I agree!

Wonderboy is my favorite karateka by far!

He has a mix of modern and old school karate. If he was an asshole, he would be the real life version of Mike Barnes!

Liddell, Wonderboy, and of course the fake Ralph Macchio, Machida
