UFC 272: Covington vs. Masvidal

I'm stuck at work and haven't been keeping up. What happened with Islam?

But is Mitchell just going to stand there and go toe to toe and trade like Burgos? I think Burgos is not good, he's fun, he's tough, puts on action fights, but he's also a punching bag and has no gameplan
No i think it goes like the Makwan fight. Makwan is a more proven grappler who tapped out better fighters and was a freestyle champ.

If you swap their opponents pin Mitchell against Barbosa's last four and vice a versa

I think Mitchell loses to Makwan, Ige, and Giga would put him out sooner and Shane would possibly do the same that I think Edson will do on saturday.. Barbosa would beat all of Mitchell's opponents much more convincing.

Fighters do get old overnight and he took another beating in his last fight. Also took a bunch of big shots in the Burgos fight you mentioned. Not super confident but I think Bryce takes it.
Bryce isn't going to put much of a beating, on the feet he has no chance, he needs vicious ground and pound, which we haven't seen. He's been reversed 5x in his ufc career , taken down 8x when faced fellow grapplers, 33% td defense, indicators of a grappler who has flaws. I would rate Makwan a higher grappler who has never been matched in grappling and he suffered a loss to edson, I think edson already proved he can deal with less skillful grapplers than Khabib and Lee, i would not rate Mitchell anywhere near those two or even Makwan.

  • Fiziev pulls out vs RDA, UFC seeks replacement
  • Islam offers to step in to fight RDA, they go back and forth on twitter, agree to fight. No offer is made by UFC.
  • Moicano is confirmed to step in vs RDA, still a 5 round fight.

Alright, I guess I'm up to speed. Any idea why they didn't squeeze the trigger on the Islam offer?
Issue with medical clearance? or did it stem from the 170lbs request?
I guess they probably want to put Islam into a 155 titleshot ASAP and it would be harder to sell if his two previous fighters were at 160 and 170? haha.

EDIT: I just saw on Twitter that RDA said he called Islam's bluff haha.
Those two are overdue for a scrap.

I’m looking at putting money on Tim Elliott? Am I crazy?

I thought about it as well, actually... I just don't really know how reliable he is. I'm not super high on Tagir personally, he's looked very beatable in both of his UFC fights and that's not even against higher-level guys in the division. However, I don't think I'm going to bet on this fight. But yeah, just saying. Maybe we're both crazy, but I did think about it.

Barboza is most vulnerable to people who put good striking pressure on him, I agree that Bryce doesn't have the tools to do that.

Anyone think Jorge can win? Seems like so many are dismissive of him

I think what Jorge has going for him is his familiarity with Colby. He might know something about Colby like a hole in his striking that he can take advantage of. One of the things i notice about Colby is his lack of defense to side kicks and body blows. In the Rda fight, watch the last round and you see colby looked winded after having absorbed over 37 body strikes, Jorge is also a body snatcher like Rda , which we saw in the nate diaz fight. If Jorge can weather Colby's takedowns and survive to the later rounds, i can see him sapping Colby's stamina with knees to the body and side kicks. Power also is on Jorge's side , he secured 11 knockdowns and high rated kos more so than Colby. Colby will win the decision if it goes to the fifth, but I favor that the finish probability is on Masvidal.

rewatched the Damian maia fight too, Maia was able to land lots of right hands on Colby and cut his face up, and Maia is not even known for being a good striker.

This is largely to do with Colby being a 90% offensive fighter who will fight high pace and wear on you as he shoots doubles and throws high volume strikes. I can easily see masvidal stealing the first round with the more heavier blows.

Im still leaning on colby to win because of Masvidal's age. But i think Masvidal at 350+ looks tempting. I wonder if Jorge being pissed off actually makes him stronger and fight with more ferociousness. Kind of like a perk in a game that you can set to a fighter. Anyways that is my two cents, I'm not gonna ride or die on this one.

On the topic of familiarity, we need to take into account that, of the two, Colby is the one that has had new coaching since their training days.

If anything that might mean that Colby will be the one better prepared of the two. Only reason I wouldn't back Colby is that Jorge's TDD is pretty solid, and Covington being a very hittable guy.

yeah im just gonna pass. im not gonna try too hard to defend this. its really for more proving that Jorge is dangerous, and colby could lose, but im not sure really what will happen. The likely scenario is that colby wins a decision after tiring Jorge.

still going to pick Jorge out of fandom

Kind of tempted to throw some money on Masvidal. My book has him +260 dog right now.

Maybe people are already aware of this, but Moroz is from Ukraine. Not sure how or if this will influence the fight, but obviously she's going to want to pull of a big win and show support to her countrymen in the post-fight interview. Plus the added beef with nutty Agapova, so she'll definitely be fired up for this.

Or she has family in Ukraine and has other things on her mind. Works both ways it's all speculation.

Yes, of course. I'm well aware of that, since I make the same counter argument when people make the case that a fighter gains dadpowers when they have a newborn, it's very circumstantial, but it's still something to keep in the back of the mind.
