Can we talk about overrated bands?

Most people who say bands "weren't good musicians" really don't understand the most important part of music is songwriting. Great songs do not have to be complicated, and honestly, many top songs that have stood the test of time are very straightforward and basic.

Thinks Tool is overrated and sounds the same, but then says Weezer has two good albums and a handful of other alright songs.

That's true the formula for a great song is usually simplistic melodies and song writing. But the odd time you get a very complexed lyrically speaking song. But they are few and far between.

How about Kiss for starters

They ran out of good new material a long time ago, and they certainly weren't Bob Dylan or Leonard Cohen when it came to lyrics, but their albums had some bangers on them through to the 90s.

They’ve had more final tours than the Eagles. Which one was this?

I agree with l examples in the op.

I'll add Metallica. Gateway metal band who had 3 good albums. Rest of them are trash.

Kill 'Em All
Ride the Lightning
Master of Puppets
And Justice for All
Black

And numerous other songs. I know it's trendy to hate on them but damn.

Nirvana for me. Grew up in the 90s. Nothing spectular or different than other grunge bands.

Oh they've been stringing it out for a paycheck for 25 years now. But they were more serious once upon a time.

I'll start with some obvious ones and then you guys can fill in the rest.

Nirvana: Of all the overrated bands none is more overrated than these guys. Seriously, how do they get called one of the greatest ever? They have one good album and was only around for about 3 years. Every song is just simple power chord stuff with incoherent lyrics. If Cobain doesn't kill himself they'd be lucky to be considered a top 100 band.

Queen: They have 3 amazing songs. Every thing else Is either sub par or lame.

Foo fighters: the ultimate dad rock band. Their debut album was ok and everything else since then has gotten progressively worse. It's like they intentionally make music for suburban moms who need something to listen to when they drive to the mall to buy their husband a sweater. Some of the safest blandest shit you'll hear in your life.

Pretty sure nobody ever said Nirvana were music geniuses, themselves included. They mainly had the good sound at the good time. They still have some very good songs and as being said before unplugged is a little gem.

Completely agree.

What bothers me most about kiss is the mismatch between how evil and hardcore their image is, versus how bland and safe their actual songs are.

Take away their makeup and they sound like a shitty glam rock band with maybe 1 decent song.

Tool.

Every single song sounds exactly the same.

Every album, exact same sound.

Have to say that basketball drummer dude they have don't play check pneumonia or whatever its called don't matter he hittin it like prime Bonham...but yeah lead man is terrible

edit found it

"Arguably lingering too long" and "not a great band" are not at all the same

Ironically, the Eagles are also a fantastic band, abuse of the word "final" notwithstanding

I mean... different strokes and all that, but:

Rush
AC/DC
Black Sabbath
Foo Fighters
U2 (also, their lead guitar player calls himself "The Edge", which is just absolute cringe)

I’ve seen them. Joe Walsh was a highlight and that took an hour and a half.

I don't know if I would call their songs safe. They were kind of like the rock version of 2 Live Crew and sex hop when it came to songs like Love Gun or Lick it Up. I mean definitely tamer and less explicit than 2 Live Crew...or Prince for that matter...but still not all that safe in glam rock terms.

They don't have a whole lot to say with their lyrics otherwise in the vast majority of their material. But it's not like they were pretending to be badass while singing Stryper songs.

Anyway, which song do you think is their decent one?

They are all great musicians, but as Tool it's all the same.

Before their last album came out I knew exactly what it sounded like, I knew exactly what the theme was. I knew what chords and the progressions before ever having listened to it.

If they came out with a funk album, or something completely off the wall experimental and not their bread and butter, I'd maybe change my tune.

If they took a single fucking chance.

But they don't, so they are overrated in my opinion.
