Rogan: "No Stand Ups in MMA" - Cue 2 Minutes of Moaning About Abdelwahab vs Mayes

They literally format fights with rounds because, well, fuck someone lying on top of someone.

The whole set up of MMA is geared towards stuff actually happening.
Stand-ups are only supposed to happen in rare circumstances, in a neutral position, when it's a stalemate.

Not when one guy is on top literally punching his opponent in the face.

You are normally a good poster and I respect your opinion, but this is a bad take. That standup was garbage.

we got an MMA hipster here. This nerd writes the rules on what ppl can enjoy.

You can enjoy standup. There's shit exclusively for that. Boxing, kickboxing, Muay Thai, etc...

But you don't want to put in the effort to follow Glory kickboxing because UFC is on ESPN and you can digest it easily.

With that criteria, the stand up should have taken place sooner.

No way you can complain about the officiating - but this thread is about the nonsensical commentary and idea of NO STAND UPS, so please don't derail my bro!

Respect you also.

Believe he was referring to stand up comedians... Like stand up comedians shouldn't be in MMA.

You are 100000% correct sir!

NO STAND UPS is unrealistic purist nonsense. I just think they should be extremely rare.l

We are totally agreed!

Whether you liked the Abdelwahab-Mayes stand up or not (I think you didn't lol), the commentary was totally unwarranted - they moaned about it for 120 seconds straight, and it didn't even happen while they were complaining!

Ludicrous.

you don’t know what I put effort into. ESPN has been a terrible for MMA fans.

No big deal, Joe didn’t quite know how to express himself, he’s sitting cage side while watching Mayes get Greco-Pharo rawdogged by a tan and muscular Hamdy..., the repressed sexual feelings, Joe couldn’t just touch himself mid-broadcast, so not sure what to do he lashed out at the referee out of jealousy because he closer to the action and inexplicably stood em up

Honestly though stands ups very rarely happen in MMA anyway but as soon as you impose a time limit and judging I think you favour the wrestler.

For some reason he thinks that's realistic yet in every kind of street fight you'll have actual walls and objects that confine you into an area. Infinite Tekken stages don't exist Rogan.
And in the streets there isn't a ref telling you to stand up. If you cannot get up on your own, then that is where the fight happens.

I am not saying there should be no stand ups, but five minutes is not that long either. I have wondered about stand ups after two minutes of grappling inactivity, no real strikes or subs, including both lay-n-pray and wall-n-stall (which is grappling). I just wonder if it would ever get enforced.

I have also wondered if it should fall under the timidity rule, but that would definitely be abused, if it would be ever enforced. Timidity is rarely seen or enforced outside the amateur/regional circuit, and most of the time, those fighters will tap to strikes, or look for some other way out of the fight.

Stand ups also for when your opponent grossly misses weight and tries to lay on you. Rumble was stood up quite quick when he took Vitor down. IIRC was in Brazil and Ref probably wanted to get home intact. But in general if hitting opponent and going for subs just as eventful as running around the ring evading punches. The opponent on bottom cannot just stall their way out either. But stalemates where going nowhere should be a reset

He doesn’t like laynpray but doesn’t want someone to get stood up if they can’t do it themselves. I think that’s fair.

Just like everyone else, Rogan is every bit as selective when it comes to rulesets. He just likes to act like his ruleset is the most realistic when it's not. I agree with no stand ups, but the football field idea is retarded. If you want pure realism, grabbing the cage should be allowed and the fighter on bottom should be able to throw upkicks even if the top fighter is considered "grounded." Strikes to the back of the head, eye pokes, and groin shots should all be legal if "realism" is the goal.

Man, what the hell are Rogan and DC talking about tonight?

First Rogan is like 'there shouldn't be any stand ups in MMA', like he actively wants to disincentivize action. NO STAND UPS? Well why would you risk going for a punch, elbow or submission if activity is absolutely not required?

Then we get 2 minutes of non-stop moaning in Round Three of Abdelwahab vs Mayes about a stand up that DOESN'T EVEN HAPPEN until there's 50 seconds left - and then Rogan screams 'OHHH' like we're witnessing a major miscarriage of justice!

Just retire, Rogan, that was a hack-esque performance. We all know Cormier is a wrestler and will enjoy a bit of wrestling, but when Abdelwahab is doing absolutely nothing for 4:10 of a round, why can't we have a stand up? Because we've decided we've changed the rules based on who's commentating?

Embarrassing nonsense on the UFC broadcast.

To be fair, Rogan has been doing this for years. Like literally a decade and a half
