Will Cigarettes in America ever be phased out?

Notice how you're saying that second hand smoke is not deadlier than smoking. That's a very careful, circumscribed argument. It's not of practical importance whether it's deadlier or not: smoking is already very deadly. It could be equally as deadly or slightly less deadly and remain a massive problem. The way you word your argument implies that if smoking was as equally deadly to the health of others as the smoker, that would be fine. It's not fine. We're not all trainwrecks destroying our bodies and content dying at 50. I've lived in apartment buildings that had smokers in the past and it was miserable, waking up with headaches and a sore throat some days through no decision of my own because some degenerate couldn't be bothered opening a window or stepping outside.
You’re attacking Strawman, not Starman.

I didn’t say secondhand smoke was healthy. I said that it was a myth that it was more deadly, or that it caused cancer. A myth perpetuated by rampant government overreach.

I’m not defending smoking, as I’ve already stated multiple times. I think smoking is retarded. My argument is that if it dies out, it should die out because society allowed it to die out, not because big government went to war with private industry.

In 2021 the government collected $12,140,000,000 in taxes from tobacco. During the 2016 election cycle, tobacco companies contributed over $2.5 million to politicians in each state. The answer is, cigarettes will never be phased out in America.

Hopefully not. I like cigarettes in concept. Too bad that i never really managed to get into smoking them regularly.

I'm not a smoker and hate the smell, but hate the witch hunt against smokers. We are adults, we should live in a world where smokers and non-smokers can be catered to.

The world is grey. Government intervention can often be bad, but in my opinion this is a rare moment where government intervention was actually helpful. If tobacco addicts are slightly inconvenienced by it, I really don't care; that's their problem. They've been inconveniencing everybody else for decades and don't stop unless they're stopped.

Its totally disgusting and it usually goes hand in hand with irresponsibility/weakness. It would be nice to see it go away.

I have heard that it is trending downwards but I'm just not seeing it.

Not sure what it's like over there, but up here you can't smoke anywhere indoors, and cigs are like $15-20 a pack. Hasn't put a plug in it. I think it's here to stay.

Really? Almost no one smokes in my area and that's a good thing.

I will never cater to dorks that stand near entrances of restaurants, airports, grocery stores etc etc etc and smoke away. Creating a smoky cloud for everyone to walk through. That's bullshit.

That private industry was a POS though putting additives in to make it more addictive. It's not like the industry was wholesome.

With indoor smoking bans and outdoor smoking bans standing feet away from buildings, it seems like smoking ciggs in public is more of an embarrassment.
Younger folks (generation z) are more into vaping and most likely never touched a cigg in their life before.
Then you have weed smokers & cigar smokers that are absolutely disgusted by how nasty cigarettes are.

After the baby boomer generation passes away, will the allure & glam of cigarettes completely phase out in the future?

Cigarettes are slowly being phased out and replaced by vaping

that's mostly because they're forced to.

Not really. Vaping has now found itself in the same cross hairs as cigarettes. Considered unhealthy. Restrictions up the ass. It's not so much the socially acceptable alternative it once was.

Not in America, I don't think smoking will ever die-out in the 3rd world

I actually have no problem with this. Second hand stuff is virtually nonexistent and it doesn't involve picking up cigarette butts everywhere.

I don't like cigarette smoke either, I just don't think it's government's job to tell people to put out their cigarettes. That's society's job.

Food and drink companies also put additives into their product, very little of it good or healthy. It's not government's job or right to tell me whether or not I should smoke a cigarette, drink a big gulp, or eat a steak for dinner every night. And when you allow them to regulate one, there is nothing stopping them from moving on down the line.

The problem with people that believe in using big government as a cudgel against things they don't like is they don't understand that that same cudgel can be used against them.

A lot of you are fine with the war on tobacco, but howl like stuck pigs if someone even hints pot or other drugs are bad for you.
