It's pretty simple actually:

When you are the bigger fighter, you are supposed to win.

A smaller fighter eating more and cutting less weight doesn't make him equal size to the fighter a weight class above.

When you are supposed to win easily and the smaller fighter "almost" (if not actually) beats you, it is nothing to bragg about.

In short: The LW champ who is #2 p4p is supposed to beat a FW coming up to his weight class fucking easily. If he struggles to the point where people can debate who won the fight, it is embarrassing and definitely doesn't make him p4p #1.

If you disagree with the above it should be no problem for Islam to move up to WW and have a very, very close fight with the WW champ. He is in his estimation #1 p4p after all. I am excited to see him challenging the winner of Leon vs Usman next - hold your breath!

Yeah the principle TS you're describing typically is applied to fighters who are more than 1 weight class apart who will never fight each other.

155 was run by an ex 145 gatekeeper before Islam. Max went up to 155 and the guy who beat him was a 145 transplant. Islam should be ranked above Volk for beating him. Volk should not be graded on a curve here. Hes probably the 2nd best fighter in this division maybe by a healthy margin. Islam beat Volk he gets to be ranked higher at least for now.

Of course Jones is the REAL P4P number 1.

When the bigger fighter loses or nearly loses to the smaller fighter,
and pound for pound is the question,
the assertion that the bigger fighter is the "best if all fighters were the exact same size and weight,"
is unsupported by logic or reason.

Also, it was big fun watching Volk beat on him at the end of R5. Islam was done. Volk was just getting started.

This will be the new Diaz-Condit for years to come.

P4P is a way to compare fighters who are at different weights. Islam and Volk fought each other at 155lbs and Islam won.

I really don't care about P4P arguments, but the amount of hoops you have to jump through to say Volk > Islam is crazy

p4p isn't what it used to be consider how bad ufc current roster is

I think some people will never get over this decision.

Even if you think the decision is fine (which is a reasonable position), it doesn't make the bigger fighter the better fighter p4p. Too close for that.

Volkanowski was beating Islam like a cheap hooker owing him money in the 5th round. That doesn't change the scoring for the other four rounds. But it fucking changes the perception who is #1 p4p if those fighters come from different weight classes.

If the fight was no-time limit, the P4P #2 would have destroyed the P4P #1, who happens to be a weight class above him.
I agree with the decision (48-47) but the fact Islam won a close fight (who can disagree on that?) on top of getting mauled during the last round is plenty enough to deny him his P4P rank.

So if Islam just eats away and doesn't cut any weight, weighs in at 208 lbs, fights Parker Porter at HW and gets ktfo in r1, Parker Porter is #1 p4p - lest we have to jump through too many hoops?

if there was no time limit islam would have won the first round on striking and kept volks back from the end of the first until the end.
Which end if there is no time limit, lol?
He would 100% have let go off Volk's back at some point, after realizing he was just getting punched repeatedly by someone who was laughing in his face, lol.
