Citations of Chinese research have risen because of sequencing of Covid-19 genome

China has overtaken the US to become the biggest contributor to nature-science journals, in a sign of the country’s growing influence in the world of academic research.

The Nature Index, which tracks data on author affiliations in 82 high quality journals, found that authors affiliated with Chinese institutions are more prolific than their US counterparts in physical sciences, chemistry, Earth and environmental sciences. The only category in which the US is still in the lead is life sciences.

The finding comes from a snapshot of the Nature Index’s data taken in April. The full data for 2022 will be released this year. Other organisations that track scientific research have also found the balance shifting towards China.

Last year, a report by Japan’s National Institute of Science and Technology Policy found that between 2018 and 2020, Chinese research accounted for a greater share of the top 1% of the most frequently cited papers than US studies. That report also found that China published a yearly average of 407,181 scientific papers, ahead of the US’s 293,434.

Citations of Chinese research have increased because of references to the sequencing of the Covid-19 genome. But although rankings of scientific research now place China ahead of the US, the two countries are the biggest bilateral research collaborators and many of China’s most-cited papers are produced in collaboration with international researchers.

As relations between the US and China sour it has become harder for scientists from those two countries to collaborate. Between 2018 and 2022 the US justice department’s china initiative, which had aimed to root out Chinese spies in US academia, resulted in more than 100 scientists losing their jobs. Chinese universities also scrutinise collaborations with foreigners.

Xi Jinping, China’s leader, has pushed for the country to become a world leader in scientific research. In February, he said the government would boost research funding as academia increasingly became a frontier for technological competition.

But Chinese researchers say they are pressured to prioritise quantity over quality, and there have been allegations of fraud or low-quality research being produced in order to boost the volume of output. In 2020, the Ministry of Science and Technology banned universities and research institutions from offering financial incentives for publishing more papers.

I think China will be the world leader, as we watch America slowly decay before our eyes, and the values they once stood for erode away. The corruption, the tyrannical two-party system, it isn't going to last much longer. In the current state, America is too stubborn to allow the big changes which is needed to fix these issues. The two-party system hinders progress, as each side fight against each other. I think society will come crashing down at some point, either through a revolution of the people tired of current corrupt system, a financial collapse, or a war. The issues lie deeper as well, as any nation which rules by the principles of capitalism is destined to fail.

hopefully this makes up for how much trash they dump into the ocean

lmao

Did they publish these facts themselves? Because i don't believe it when they're busy trashing up beautiful areas, and damning up water ways, an fucking up other country's ecosystems because "china"

Japan came to the conclusion, not China

And as we all know, Japan hates China so this was a bitter pill for them to swallow

But are any of those contributions worth a damn scientifically?
I think most likely cos they had really huge profits to sell desinfectants, masks, gloves and covid tests for planDemic cinema worth session and are supporting WHO and their vassal states.

Maybe soon we will see planDemic covid new strains with new stamm mutation and tests etc.
If with small valuable for China war laboratorium called " war in Ukraine " will not be enough. :D

The hard math and sciences departments in the US are flooded with Asian, specifically Chinese people, why are people surprised with this news? They literally have larger brains with more mass than everyone else = higher IQs

There’s a lot of context in the article if you have an entire spare minute of your life, more than the usual doom predicting for America that these threads are meant to be.

- I usually highlight those, because i know some people will pass over the text::D

Neanderthals had bigger brains than anatomically modern humans.
The oldest civilization in the world was Sumer.
Why does China keep copying and stealing technology from the West and Japan (primarily the West). You would think they should be the world leader in technology.

LOL @ this nonsense. You're clearly off your crazy medication. The fact is that America is, and always will be, the world's premiere power in all things, especially science. What your racist article failed to point out is that the U.S. leads all other nations in research relating to sexual orientation and changes, along with pronoun regulation and other forms of correct thinking.

China will fade from the picture, as they only focus on stupid research like lasers, hypersonics, etc., while our proud scienticians propel us upward to new heights with breakthroughs in gender and race issues. I couldn't be more proud to be an American at this point. I feel sad for anyone who feels any other way.

Yea but are they teaching their kids about inclusion and diversity? No just academics what a bunch of bigots
I know you are being sarcastic...
They (CCP) are teaching the opposite of diversity, tolerance and inclusion. They are promoting/nurturing Han supremacy / Nationalism.

HERE WE GO!

Two brave posters leading the way for the other flag wavers to totally derail the thread and talk about absolute nonsense - they can't be left to shoulder all the hard work alone, anyone else wanna start dunking on trannies instead of discussing the actual topic at hand?

From what I heard their tik tok is all about education and they are super strict in schools beyond reasonably strict, but they will keep beating us in testing scores. Ya they do have the Muslim camps and all that

I think people make too big a deal of test scores. Pretty much all of Asia emphasize cramming and test scores. When I was living in the MidEast usually it was the Indian kids who got the highest scores. Doesn't really mean they are smarter than everyone else. They had a stereotype for being bookworms.

At the end of the day what really matters is innovation, invention and creativity. American kids don't study as much as Asian kids (kids in Asia), but I think the American educational system is better because it emphasizes exploration, creativity and free thinking.

There is something that China will never (not for the forseable future) beat the US at, and that is the softpower that comes with being the #1 nation for entertainement / music etc...
