Television True Detective: Night Country- Season 4

After releasing the GOAT season of television, I will always give True Detective a shot

They don't have the showrunner (Nic Pizzolatto) from the first 3 seasons. As far as I know, they just made a new detective show and slapped the True Detective name on it for marketing purposes.

This, and also, instead of filming in Alaska they shoot it in Iceland. Clearly the choice of writer/director, and leads is very 2024. This is just another in a long line of recent fuck ups by modern Hollywood.

I watched 2 shows set in the Canadian arctic recently - The Terror and the North Water. Both were very good, but the Terror's film locations kind of sucked. It was filmed in Hungary/Croatia/Vancouver lol. The North Water was filmed in Svalbard and it suited the show very well.

Episode 2 was a lot better than episode 1. I do think the story line with Jodi Foster's adopted daughter is creepy and unnecessary. Is the director a lesbian? If so, it's exploitative too.

Overall I am a lot more optimistic after episode 2.

Second episode was better, but man, this season just feels so lifeless. It's definitely not terrible, but it's pretty mid.

I feel like they didn't really know how to start it, but now the story is starting to roll. Encouraging.

** Just want to note that I think season 3 would be considered a classic if it weren't for season 1.

This season 4 thing is shit:

* LGBTABC + bitchy women + racism straight in your face from the word go.. you're modern Americans, we get it, stop force-feeding your nonsense into all of your products.
* Characters having conversations that explain their backstories like the audience is 3 years old.. "well, just because in the last se had XYZ come between us at Bandcamp, doesn't mean I forgive you for 123". People don't talk like this, it's demeaning to the audience and comes at the expense of meaningful character development.
* Shit house CGI right off the bat.
* Shit house horror tropes so old and cliched that they hurt to watch. *Queue shadowy figure doing a drive-by in the background*... "Hello, is someone there?"
* The interpretive dance routine of the dead man's ghost in the first episode. Way to shit on any introduction of the supernatural later in the series. All the mystique and potential shock factor is now at zero.

The whole thing just feels really bad. Like it was constructed by a bunch of kids that had just seen the X files for the first time and also had big studio pressure on their backs got told to make "something cool that twitter will like".
Noones forcing you to watch.

Just like with everything. Don't wanne eat shitty sugary cereals? Don't fucking buy them.
And like you said, it's THEIR product. If you are not happy don't get it.
I'm not raging nonstop about more and more plant-based shit in my supermarket and really why would I?! It's their brand, in someones supermarket and my decision to get it or not.

It's really easy.

makes sense to me as behavior a rebelling teen, like Leah without a real mom/female loving figure in her life, might exhibit in 2024 I'm not sure what's creepy about it. It's about as woke as Meadow dating a black guy in Sopranos.

Leah's room has some drawings that resemble the trailer. Want to say she's connected but S1 had Woody's kids drawing yellow king/rituals with crayons and absolutely never followed up on it.

Also the ghost's last name was Cohle, right? Travis Cohle iirc.

Rust's dad maybe?
yes the writing goes to some great lengths like talking about his leukemia etc. so you know it's his dad.

"some of his ideas were pretty out there" rust talking about his dad if i recall correctly

Settle down. Yeah, he can choose not to watch, almost nobody is.

Riding the wave of Season 1's greatness the second season's pilot had 3.17m viewers on HBO. Probably at least another 5x that many pirated it (it trailed only Game of Thrones and The Walking Dead in demand expressions and on year-end piracy charts that year).

Last week's pilot had 0.56m viewers, and I doubt more than double that pirated it.

the pilot had 2 million “True Detective: Night Country” brought in over 2 million viewers Sunday night when it dropped its first episode on HBO and Max.

That's right around where Euphoria and White lotus were in their premiers and they ended up with almost 10x that many views in later episodes I think Max is happy with where they are at with this show.

"For comparison, the second season of “The White Lotus” premiered to 1.5 million viewers across platforms, while the first episode of “Euphoria” Season 2 delivered 2.4 million cross platform viewers. Those seasons of “The White Lotus” and “Euphoria” ultimately tallied around 15.5 million and 19.5 million viewers per episode, respectively."

I was going off the Wiki, so I'm guessing it was edited before this update. That's better than S3, but still not terribly great considering how much more saturated those streaming services have become.

I'm waiting for it to end or hear great buzz to get going. I dont mind waiting and I prefer watching shows in Its entirety, but are the reviews so far mixed?

It's actually more impressive considering how saturated the market has become. S1 did not have to face the same market this season is.

Kind interesting someone would purposely put bad numbers on wiki. Kind of shows the strange animosity it's faced and how much people are hoping it fails.

So Danvers had a family that died in a car accident (hit by drunk?) and the driver of the other car, a local was killed as well and that left behind Leah whom Danvers took in as her child and they have a fucked up grief bond? I think the ice skid scene and some others allude to this.

Maybe the driver that killed her family being local explains Danver's disdain/racism for the locals.
