Reminds me of my first time golfing in Florida. It was with two sisters of my Dr friend I lived with. It was on a course their retired aunt and uncle live on. So the the elder of the two sisters. Was a very avid golfer with her husband. Had played the course many times, and knew it well.
On one fairway I had a tiny slice. I could see it roll over a little rise on the right edge of the fairway about 230 yards out.
The elder one says..
What a shame.. That’s a lost ball. Take a stroke. It should be 2. But we only count it as one here.
I laughed and said.. What are you talking about? It will be barely in the rough about 240 out. And 100 yards to the green. I saw where it went.
She says, I saw it too, and starts laughing. I thought she was losing her mind.
They were in one cart I was in the other. They start following me down the right side. But they were both left, and shorter including the ladies tee (avid golfing sister told casual golfing sister to stay left at all costs).
I said you guys are over there. She says.. Maybe we can help you find your ball. And starts laughing again.
I drive over the rise. There’s a “water hazard” I could not see from the tee box.
There were like 4 alligators laying right there beside the water. A couple had to be 13’ long.
I’m from fucking Canada. Wild Alligators aren’t a thing up there. I turned around looking at the sisters. Evil sister starts cackling, and almost fell out of their golf cart (we did have a cpl adult beverages in us by this point).
I’m like.. What in the flying fuck kind of bullshit penalty is this? I see my ball right there at the edge.
She says.. Go get it then. She almost died laughing.
I took a stroke, and dropped a new ball well away from the prehistoric creatures. Great times.
Fishing inland on Hilton Head Island, SC once I had to beware. There were a few alligators around this little inlet type thing that you see up and down the Intercoastal Waterway on the East Coast. Especially from SC south through GA, into FL.
The aligators were not huge (like FL) but big enough, thank you. But not close enough to really worry about. But I kept catching fish. About 3, or 4 different species of salt water fish. That was a great session of fishing. 14 in about 3 hours. I always catch and release with as little harm to the fish as possible, and always with a current legal for that state temporary fishing license.
Every time I hooked and landed a fish the alligators would come closer. And from both sides. I kept my head on a swivel but they never got close enough to totally freak me out. It was a bit uncomfortable though.
Really great memories though.
