Social So the KC Chiefs name is blatant racism?

More teams need name changes.

49ers - Minorities were taken advantage of during the gold rush.

Patriots - Encompasses right wingers that support a racist system.

Cowboys - Racist towards Indians.

Eagles - Bird that symbolizes America, which is a racist country.

Steelers - White people job privilege.

Dolphins - Only people benefiting from wealth and privilege can afford to swim with them.

Vikings - Mean white people.

Browns - Have been kept bad by the NFL for decades. Obviously racist.

Bills - Teasing native americans with an animal they used to benefit from, but can no longer.

Colts - Privileged white people transportation from centuries ago.

Chargers - Making a mockery of people who can't pay their power bill due to systemic racism.
I sincerely hope you copied and pasted that from some right-wing shit site and didn't actually bother wasting time thinking and typing that yourself.

It's only a matter of time ayyyyyyyyyyyyy
What do you personally think about it? I'm not a fan of the overgeneralization of Native Americans, but it's never really come off as offensive like some of the other team names. I always thought the Blackhawks were pretty respected, the Chiefs were whatever, and the Redskins/Indians were what sparked real controversy.

Should be renamed to The Chieftains

Yeah the (now) Washington Football Team was the big one. Chiefs was never high up on my list. I mean, I hate Native sports mascots in general, so i'll always be happy to see them go, and this one for sure does too, but most of my clamoring has been about a handful of others.

The name has nothing to do with native Americans. The team was named after a mayor of the city.

I do see fans dressing up as native Americans as disrespectful though.

when a modern day man finds dressing up for a chiefs game offensive you know you had so much shit pumped through your head you’re either offended or think it’s disrespectful.

The chiefs name and arrowhead stadium and the logo and its disrespectful to natives who don’t care in the slightest but you’re finding it disrespectful?

how could you go through life with that attitude? Like you’re finding offense on behalf of a race and they don’t care at all.
As it’s not a big deal.
Waah notre dame mascot is a leprechaun with his dukes up. It’s so disrespectful.

it’s a name in a game and you think it’s disrespectful to dress up and show pageantry. I’ve honestly never talked to or met a man like you in real life.

and your mayor narrative is semi true but the reality of the name and imagery and everything about it is about Indians or native Americans. As ya know with the entire logo and name and the stadium name.
And you have no idea why die hard sports fans dress up as chiefs.

“ I for one fine it disrespectful for a chiefs fan to dress up as a chief”. Said no man ever. But you.

Interesting how they went from this to the Chiefs (they were originally in Dallas).

As is par for the course, this topic is back in the news for Native communities. As an American Indian I am on the fence with most of this and honestly don't get offended like others seem to. Recently, there were several high schools in Oklahoma that were pressured to change their mascot names from Redskins or similar. But there are still many in use that I'm sure are on the short list of groups pushing for more change.

I was actually thinking about buying this . . . how has your stance changed since this thread started?

KC Football Team in Overtime: Time to Drop the Chiefs Name

On Sunday, hundreds of Native Americans and allies will be on hand outside the State Farm Stadium, the site of Super Bowl LVII, to protest the Kansas City football team’s name, mascot and the fan-led tomahawk chop.

Given the game’s global audience and media presence, organizers of the protest feel the Super Bowl will provide a venue to underscore the offensive misappropriation of Native American imagery, as evidenced by hashtags: #notyourchief; #notyourmascot; #changethename; and #stopthechop.

The pushback against teams using Native American imagery is justified because research reveals that images and behavior connected to Native mascots contribute to lower self esteem, increased rates of depression and increased in-school discrimination toward Native youth.

Protest organizers maintain franchises like the Kansas City football team dehumanize Native peoples while encouraging racist behavior in stadiums, at schools and on social media. Kansas City and the NFL continue to allow—and reap major profits from—the blatant racism of the team’s very name, logo and behavior like the tomahawk chop.

While some sports teams and fans maintain the usage of Native American imagery serves to honor the heroic nature of Native people, the fact is that most Native Americans disagree.

In recent years to the delight of Native Americans, the Washington NFL team changed its offensive team name to the Washington Commanders. Both sides of the issue won because Native Americans no longer have to listen to “scalp the RedskIns!” and the franchise won because they are now cashing in on fans who purchase new merchandise with the Commandeers name on it.

Beyond the push for the Kansas CIty franchise to drop its name, this past week, Gila River Indian Community Governor Stephen Roe Lewis, noted the Super Bowl LLVI Host Committee's "unprecedented" acknowledgement of Arizona's 22 Native American tribes.

This past week, the NFL highlighted Native artists whose art was chosen to be part of the NFL’s collection for Super Bowl LVII memorabilia.

The NFL has designated four local Native American communities as Official Super Bowl Host Committee Partners: Ak-Chin Indian Community, Fort McDowell Yavapai Nation, Gila River Indian Communities, and Tohono O’odham Nation. Representatives of the tribes welcomed both teams as they arrived in Arizona.

These gestures of recognition by the NFL are great, but they do not offset the need for the Kansas City NFL franchise to drop its name. They are in overtime on this account.

KC Football Team in Overtime: Time to Drop the Chiefs Name

love how articles like this always start with one dude's opinion but it's made to sound like the entire society is for it.

"it's time to..."

Are jokes allowed here? i find them the funniest.

Team names based around indigenous groups were not done out of racist intent, but generally from appreciation for their tenacity and warrior spirits. Proper terms by todays standards? Maybe not and maybe that needs addressing.

Redskins was racist. I don’t think Chiefs is.

Do most native Americans even give a shit about this? I think that’s the important question
I don't agree that redskins was all that racist. I see it much like when people use "redneck". Both mean different things to different people.

Most of us have bigger issues to worry about than mascot names. I get that some think it influences other things that can cause social problems, but not to the same scale that other issues have impacted communities.

Just sayin'.

Edit: you didn't comment on the story you quoted. Do you take some sort of exception to this paragraph?
