If Alexander Karelin entered UFC 1

Anyone who thinks Karelin would have won UFC 1 is delusional. Dude was a beast, but Rorion would have chosen Rickson to represent the family instead of Royce and the result would have been the same. Nobody outside of the Gracie family(and to some extent the Brazilian BJJ community) had any idea how to neutralize the BJJ submission game.

Gracie Jiu-Jitsu was gonna prevail no matter who entered that tournament.

Rorian would've cancelled the event than having Rickson enter.

Money has a way of wrecking things.

"Rorion would have chosen Rickson"???? So Rorion had control over family? Rickson was on a speed dial at Rorion's beckon call?????
Or was it that Rorion and Rickson weren't on speaking terms at that time and Royce was the only one in the family that Rorion could get to do their infomerical at that time.

Face facts, the Gracies weren't going to invite Karelin, odds are the Russian government wouldn't have allowed Karelin to do the fight. If they did, as said before, the Russians would have known more about Gracie Jiu Jitsu than the Gracies themselves and trained Karelin accordingly. The Gracies had been doing there thing for more than 20 years before the first UFC, so I'm sure it wouldn't have been hard to find one person that they either pissed off (hell at that time for the right price they may have been able to hire Rickson or Helio themselves, the way Rorion was pissing people off) or could pay enough to show all the "secrets".

Well, first of all, Karelin wouldn't had accepted an invitation anyway since he at the time he was against cage fighting.

this is a fantasy thread, in reality, WHY ON EARTH the best olympic wrestler would even thing in joining a NHB (never done before, at least in big scale) contest with a prize of 50 k?

Yeah...

Im quite sure russia has special treatment for their athletes...although, not sure what was the state at that time, it was the transition from communism to democracy times.

This is one of the dumbest things I've read on the years I've been on this forum. The russians would've known more about GJJ than the Gracies... WTF.. doesn't even describe the level of stupidity here.

I love kerr, but there is absolutely no way. He isn't even close to the freak that was karelin.

Artur Taymazov is very similar. He just won his third straight gold in mens heavyweight wrestling. He could enter MMA right now and beat anyone. Reem and JDS have one chance to throw a strike that connects and puts him to bed, or else they would get taken down and beaten very badly. Every now and then a freak like karelin or taymazov comes along, and all we can do is watch and admire. Noone could stop them. Maybe a guy like teddy riner, because he has the submission skills and the judo, as well as the size, but I don't think he could beat those guys, and I am a judoka and judo fanatic.

Well this post WAS ALMOST AS STUPID.. he could enter right now and beat anybody...

Because he did pretty good against Mark Shultz? Fail. Karelin would have smashed him.

Well he was def. a specimen physically.

But that being said, getting hit is a different game, even for someone like him.

Rulon Gardner was scared shitless when he fought in Pride.

So it is all just speculation and it seems that a lot of people are overestimating the abilities of an Olympic legend, which is understandable I guess.

because Russian's had kgb, spestnaz and gru operatives and would infiltrate even on Gracie's toilet room or under Royce bed.

or talk to Wallid Ismail (knowing he had some hate to the Gracies).

at least ... they will take Igor Vochyanovich to train Karelin.

because it will soon become an sticky thread!

Maybe it should become a sticky thread in the Wasteland then. We're never going to be able to settle this one way or another because we can only speculate as to Karelin's ability to defend submissions.
