Social 17 year old kid from my home town killed himself because he was getting sextorted on social media

I dunno they got that girl that kept telling her ex to go kill himself. So there's a little hope.
True. But that was an ex. This was a scam. Many scams are done in poor countries to get money. I doubt many Americans would put in that effort for 300 bucks.

I feel like a different teenager would have said "Sure go ahead" because at the end of the day nobody cares about the nudes of a guy and if you have decent social skills you can laugh it off. Of course in our year of the lord 2022 I'm assuming the teens are neurotic AF, worried about every single thing they do in fear of being #cancelled by the rabid mob. Social media is cancer and we're only about 10 years into its' widespread adoption.

Sad story and all, but what do you really tell a kid in this era? It should be common sense not to send intimate pictures over the net to somebody you've never actually met. Sadly, the internet has caused people to lose sight of reality. It's not just kids, either. Lonely old dudes are losing their life savings to scammers who pose as hot chicks from halfway around the world, with promises that they just need a few more thousand dollars to get their green card and come marry them n' shit, and they fuckin' send it to them.

The internet came along and collectively lowered the world's IQ.

Half of people have double digit IQs. The internet didnt make people dumber. It exposed more people to scammer risk.

I got taken for 2 grand 2 years ago. I hired a guy to do repairs in my garage. He had 6 good reviews online. Was tall, clean cut, and had good paperwork. Talked game on saving money.

Six months later he is blowing me off, and he gained 20 negative reviews for scamming.

Really should have gone to the FBI at the start. Hope some serious felony charges are brought against the perps, and they spend many many years in prison.

I hope They get caught and properly punished

Yes cancel culture certainly has something to do with this

It's truly sad he felt like that was his only way out. I wonder how bad would it really have been to have them leaked? So what? It's you nude. Big deal. I wish he'd talked to someone about it. :(

I think under the circumstances it would've blown over quickly. Since he was underage that would technically be considered Porn so they probably would have been taken down quickly if they were ever posted at all.

he may have had profound shame about his body for some reason.

I'm ok with the perps getting charged with murder and child molestation /rape.

I see it as exactly that.

he shouldnt have posted those nude photos..

Basically what happened is that somebody posed as a hot girl on Instagram and manipulated him into exchanging nude pictures. Once the scammers got the pictures they asked for $300 in exchange for them not spreading the pics all over social media. He paid them, but then they asked for $1000. He couldn't pay them that much so he offed himself.

I went to high school with his Dad. He was a good kid from a nice family. Athlete, good grades, never in trouble, on his way to college for sports medicine, etc... The FBI are involved now and the story is starting to get a bit of national attention. The family is allowing the media to use their late son's name and make the story public in order to spread awareness for this sort of thing. For those of you with kids please talk to them about this, as it may end up saving their life.

I personally know 2 people this happened to. One guy came out unscathed, never paid but the person exorting him never followed through.

The 2nd guy got recorded beating off on webcam and they sent they video to everyone on his friends list, including his family and ex wifes family. Horrible stuff. He took it rather well though all things considered.

Probably gave you a price pre covid, then realized that price was no longer possible. Doesn't excuse burning you though. I have a family full of framers/general contractors and they no longer give a set price. They are forced to be payed by the hour now and let the customers pay for materials because they are so high and change drastically day to day.
example: 1/2 inch OSB (partical board) cost $46 per sheet. pre covid same 1/2 inch OSB was $8 per sheet.

Yeah, but that's a bit more sophisticated. I don't blame people if the scammers at least put some effort into it, even going so far as to take the con to an in-person level.

All in all, I just don't get the trust people have over the internet. Years ago I worked with a guy who went out to North Carolina to hang out with some couple he met on "World of Warcraft". Total fuckin' strangers outside of the chat. This was even before Facebook and shit had really taken off. They just blindly set up this meet, and I remember asking the guy if he was worried if they might just be crazies who were gonna rob and/or murder him when he got out there, and he was all cool with it. It didn't even enter into his mind that he might be walking into a fucking buzz saw. He wasn't a dummy, either.

Nothing happened to that guy, and it all apparently went down just fine, but still. That level of blind trust is just insane to me.

Nothing happened to that guy? It sounds like you don't know what it means to love someone. Meeting new friends is not a "nothing happened" scenario.

this is scary to think about. I like to think there is no way I would fall for something like that if internet was a big thing back when I was that age, but who knows. You're young and naive and you want it to be real.

I remember when AOL/AIM came out. This was back when digital camera's were not cheap, and most people had to use a scanner to scan their developed pictures. You would never get a chick to send you a picture or set up a date without a lot of screening you before hand.
btw.....A/S/L?

Older men were the easy target of this in the chat room days before trolls weren’t commonly known and everyone thought model profile pictures were real. Ever saw a horny teen in Omegle in 2009? They were all full of middle aged men holding their dicks while tapping Next hoping a girl would appear.

Anytime there is a crime involving computers, I think we should cut off their fingers and then put them in prison for a long time. Imagine trying to eat or even wipe you Ass with no fingers. Every time they do those things, they will think of their victim
