American Beauty ending is perfection

loved that movie when it came out. Bought the blue ray years ago and decided to watch it. It just did not hold up for me, I just could not get over how pathetic and creepy the main character is. I dont think it has anything to do what we know about spacey in real life either, I mean just the movie itself.
As I have become an adult and even more so as I have been a parent now for 13.5 years and counting, movies that sexualize teenagers in the eyes of adults bother me.

American Beauty is taking a 45 or so year old man lusting after an 18 year old girl and to some extent asking the audience to sympathize/empathize that notion.
I was 19 when it came out.
I'm 45 now. It hits different.
That's disgusting.

The ending sucked balls. At the time there was this stupid belief that every dude that hated gay people must be gay himself, and this movie just tried to reinforce that belief.

I did enjoy seeing mena suvari's tits though.

He would've banged her off it were real life too. Very unrealistic.

The film was kinda trite, but not enough to stop it from holding up decades later as a great film.

Curious to see what most people think of the film “Magnolia”….both have the same vibe
Magnolia is a much better film. Comparing them is like comparing the prestige to the illusionist.

Credit to Kevin Spacey for managing to play a creepy pervert so well though.

I laughed my ass of In theater during this movie and got weird looks because a lot of people didn't find it funny and thought it was supposed to be super serious or something.

I mean, the same thing happened when I watched American psycho in theaters, but I swear these movies were comedies

Those are movies that come to mind when I think about perfect endings. Another, one of the greatest endings in film history, but a controversial one, as deeply hated by more than those who love it, probably, is No Country for Old Men. It reminds me of the way The Sopranos divides people. I remember the latter jolted me when I first watched it, I felt cheated, unfinished, but then...when I accepted what the ending was conveying, that it really wasn't ambigous, I realized leaving me with the feeling of that is precisely what made it so great.

Although I hold perhaps no ending in higher regard than I do the final episode of the HBO series The Leftovers. If you've never watched the show, that's a big ask, in terms of investment, but I'd urge you not to read anything about it. If the show is for you, you'll know by the end of the first episode. You'll be intrigued. You'll be helplessly pulled by the question of the show's central mystery. Never before have I known a work of art to lean so heavily on a mystery like this, cliffhanger after cliffhanger, and manage to deliver a satisfying conclusion. The Leftovers did, and even more. It's astonishing.
Always wanted to checkout the left overs but never did. I'm going to try and get into it this weekend if Fallout doesn't do it for me.

Yeah I was never sold on the guy being secretly gay. It would have been better if his wife killed him at the end instead of Lester

I was laughing when I saw American Psycho and The Joker at the theater

If you're not a closet gay you need to f*** right off from the Mayberry. Closeted or out and proud is a requisite for posting here

I went to see Forest Gump and didn't know anything about it and I tried not to laugh because I thought it was supposed to be a serious movie and didn't want to laugh out loud at a Retard...the next time around I laughed my ass off

Kevin Spacey was like 38 when it was shot, and Mena Suvari was like 20. That's basically any guy in his late 30s that watches porn, which is a lot. That's pretty much what a mid life crisis is, which is what the movie's about.
