Anyone think that Joey Swoll goes overboard?

Hockey is a weird place now too. Hyper-commercialized. I’m only in my mid-30’s and it feels like the world is so different from when I grew up. I help out at some camps and it’s unbelievable how nuts some of these parents are. I was a volunteer shooter at a goalie clinic for u16 and the parents are having these poor kids on skates, training like pros all year round. It doesn’t seem fun at all. I played major junior 15 years ago and even at the highest level, it was nothing like it is now for AA, u16 kids.

I got a goodlife membership and felt uncomfortable for the first time in my life at a gym. The whole thing was bizarre. So many wannabe Instagram models man. Gen Z is drastically different. I was there a month and some dude approached me wondering if I was looking to buy gear lol. That used to be super hush hush and now they’re all over social media and in person talking about it too.

I feel really weird about soceity as a whole now. Maybe it’s me realizing I’m old but everything has changed so much. My local, small gym is great though. No rude gym bullies, no weird Instagram girls, no tripods. Holy shit if I owned a gym, I’d ban everybody with a tripod
LOL at the tripods. Imagine the thought process of owning one. Here's a comparison

Me 3 months ago: There are days when I don't have time to go to the gym, but I could still do some basic workouts at home- proceed to buy a set of dumbbells at Dick's Sporting Goods

Also me earlier this week: I really want to focus on my lower abs and glutes, even on off days but they require a lot of floor exercises. My floor at home is hard- proceed to buy a mat at Dick's Sporting Goods

Wannabe fitness influencer: there are around 100-150 people at the gym at any given moment, but I want the whole world to see me doing pull ups, lunges, push ups and planks - proceed to buy a tripod for my iphone at the Apple store so I can record myself doing all of that then upload to all the socials.

You're on point about the fitness community being in a weird place.

I used to lift and go to gyms a lot over 10 years ago, had to slow down due to a health issue. Got back into it 3 years ago and some of the changes are just, odd.

People taking videos of their routines

People giving unsolicited erroneous advice

People just generally being distracted by their phones and not paying attention to people trying to get a workout done when they are walking right by them. I almost knocked someone out when I was working on a press and they got right in front of my lift. WTF

I put my headphones on and just do my thing and get out.

Influencers are something else though- if I didn't know any better and was brand new at the gym and looking for advice, I'd literally be lost with all of the erroneous and contradictory information out there.
Its crazy. I go to a gym dominated by college age people and there are almost no influencers, at least not that I notice. I know I've been recorded without my knowledge before there and maybe some people record themselves without it being noticeable, but basically, its just a bunch of people in their own worlds, working out hard. The only obnoxious people are guys my age--I'm 43--or older, ex-bodybuilders who seem embittered towards younger people. There is a guy a bit younger than me, maybe in his early to mid 30's that can cause drama as well, but for the most part he seems to leave people alone.

I'm continually thanking God that I have a gym that has such an unobtrusive, drama-free environment. This is just about the first time its been like that for me. Even when I go during busy hours, its busy, but there's still nobody disrupting anyone and you can basically always get your stuff in as long as you're willing to work in.

Nah. They post the shit to the internet, they didn't have to. People shouldn't post shit if they don't wanna catch flak for being shitty, especially when the people they're filming didn't consent to it and aren't doing anything wrong. They're just having done unto them what they're doing to others

This and on top of it, Joey doesn't send his people to wreck their shit, they just do it on their own.

Gotta admit, he's got a point here.. but again, he could also be minding his own business. He didn't need to dox the person- he just proved he isn't any better.
to be fair, she started it, he simply ended it.

it was a good roast

I heard about this. Gear catches up with you eventually... well that and it sounds like surgery gone wrong.

But regarding what he does.... I aint' mad at it, he's doing god's work and he pretty entertaining in his vids.
- Guys today look so unhealthy.

I don't mind the filming on the floor because some people have online coaching nowadays. They need to record their sets and submit their progress or form check. Even if you are an influencer there is no point having a bitch fit when someone walks in front of your camera while you are filming. Same goes for people who overreact if they think they are being filmed. I seen that before and it was weird. The dude wasn't even part of the shot until he walked in front to talk to the person who is filming themselves. I honestly don't know what is the proper etiquette in commercial gyms. It seems like there are too many new people getting into the gym and they don't know proper etiquette like fucking don't block the dumbbell rack.

I think the only time I really dislike filming is in the bathroom. People film too much in front of the bathroom mirror. It's kind of weird and it's always a group of small young kids doing it. I go to different gyms throughout the week. This influencer gym I visit doesn't have this type of issue. There are tons of tripods but they don't even want you in their shot. They will move away to film their stuff or ask you if it's ok that you are in the shot. There is also a posing room so I never see weird bathroom filming.

only instead of showing off his body, he's trying to show off this contrived pseudo-compassion.

That's unfortunate.

Focus groups show that contrived pseudo- compassion really doesn't move the needle or engage the algorithm nearly as much as fitness douchebags douchebagging around in gyms like pompous asshats

Yes, let's encourage young folks' introverted masturbatory naval-gazing in search of internet fame. THIS is what society needs!

Rage porn grievance influencers wear their hearts on their sleeves and do nothing but bitch. I don't watch him. I don't need to go to YouTube to hear people complain.

His videos are made for people who don't go to the gym. I go to a big gym with power lifting, people talking about steroids openly, and young attractive people filming. I am the weird old guy stretching in the aerobics room. Never have I ever had a bad interaction with anyone, or seen anything go down. If you work out, Joey Swoles videos won't appeal to you because he is talking about irrelevant bullshit.

I work out at a meat head/PL/BB gym too. People are always filming with tripods and lighting , dudes using smelling salts while deadlifting and not wearing shirts.

I've never had a bad interaction there. I like that type of environment because it's motivating.

The douches he finds to criticize are like
< .00001% Of the gym population. I've never run into one.

It's a pro gym. Most people are doing it for a living. I really have no issue. I am cool with people doing it in that room instead of on the gym floor or in the bathroom. Some of the guys are pros or trying to be get their pro card. They need a place to practice their routine. That gym has a Kabuki bar and other nice toys not available at commercial gyms. Nobody ever uses it. I am very happy when I am training there. Nobody cares when I am using chalk. It's much better than when I am at a commercial gym. I don't see any SARMs goblin being loud and trying to film their tiktoks.

Ah gotcha, missed that.

Was laughing thinking out a scene with young internet/self-promotion addicts:

Aimless Addict 1: "Yeah I don't get it I spend 2 hours at the gym on a 5-day routine and I've only put on 2 lbs of muscles in the last 3 months!"

Aimless Addict 2: "Whoa that sux brah, which exercise are you hitting the most?"

Aimless Addict 1: "The mirror"

That is like when I am at a normal commercial gym. It's really bad now. This generation is fucked. There are so many teens that are on steroids. The only good thing is that women are lifting nowadays.

I spent about 3 years gyming pretty hard but just a college gym pre-smart phones.

Glad to not experience this dynamic in my day to day life nor back then of course
