As Joe gets broken down by life and his job he still keeps his head high as he knows that it's not for him, but for his family. At the end of the tale his family gathers around and he passes peacefully and with a smile because in the end, his family broke the cycle and avoided having to "Eat" the Rubber Biscuit ever again.)
