The First Division of the Ukrainian National Army was created in 1943 within the German Armed Forces. It was the largest Ukrainian military unit which fought against the Soviets in World War II, with the aim of regaining Ukrainian independence. This was an objective longed for by Ukrainians for centuries.

The majority of people in Western Ukraine viewed Germany as liberators as they wanted independence from the Soviet Union for a long time before WW2 started. The Waffen SS had numerous divisions from conquered/neutral countries that only fought against the Soviets. There was a strong anti communist feeling back then that Germany wisely took advantage of.
You’d have a legitimate gripe if the guy fought against the Western allies.
