China's Canadian hostages

Section 12 of the Charter of Rights and Freedoms forbids cruel and unusual punishment. They can snatch up all the hostages they want, but Canada won't compromise its values. Meng will get her day in court and the chips will fall where they may.
We can impose asset freeze (not confiscation) on real estate properties and investments by Chinese officials and their families in Canada. Their wealth is the result of corruption anyway so we can easily do it legally through anti-laundering laws.

It does not have to be cruel. Just emulate the toughest prisons the US has.

She has not been convicted of a crime. She is being detained on an extradition request due to possible banking fraud related to Iran sanctions. Maximum security prisons are for convicted criminals with tendency to cause significant harm to others. We're not an authoritarian state like China.

Haha is that all? Maybe give Meng an episode on lockup, to really rub it in China's face.

It's not like JT can just call up presiding judge and tell him to send her to the BC Pen. She is not a risk in any way, not a career criminal, she is a permanent resident business executive who leads a giant telecom company. I don't believe there would be legal cause to lock her up like that.

She was detained by request of US authourities. Orgasmo was the first to mention that elephant in the room.

As I understand it 'Murica wants her tried there under their law and China wants her released.

That is textbook being between a rock and a hard place for little ol' Canadumb. Burned from both ends and a supposed ally.

Can the US maybe help us the fuck out with their problem?

Fucking China salivates for our land and resources and its honestly a little spooky when the only real thing preventing is our supposed allies.

Exactly. I don't know why the US gets a free pass in this bullshit. Canada is paying the price because the US is on a crusade against Huawei. This is the root cause.

Meanwhile posters want to double down against China, which is exactly what the US admin wants.

She will get a fair trial in the US. The Canadians, will not, China has a 98% conviction rate

Canada can also recognize Taiwan, and indicate they will assist India and South East Asian nations drastically upgrade their weapons systems.

Lol nobody wants Canadian weapons. Not even Canadians.

Lol, that’s the very definition of cruel and unusual punishment.
We don’t need lessons or need to emulate jack shit what the Americans are doing in nearly anything.

The only they do better there, worth anything, is entrepreneurship and even that might be more of a social thing than policy.
That and their shopping and sheer variety of restaurants (which might be related to the entrepreneurship thing I mentioned).

Meng's lawyers are requesting CSIS documents for her case. This could be our way out. If we deny the transfer of those intelligence reports, our sensitive information won't risk falling into China's hands. For Meng, her lawyers could argue to have the case tossed out as they got denied important evidence.

We keep our sensitive information and get our guys back from China. Meng takes a flight back to China and never steps in Canada again. Tough shit for Murica. Don't use Canada as your pawn then gouge us with tariffs at the same time.

"Don't be cruel, just illegally lock her up in a hellhole not fit for human habitation! That'll learn them Chinese not to be unprincipled! Freedom, fuck yeah!"

What "pressure" do you believe Canada can put them under? We could hang the bitch in the streets, and it won't do a damn thing to change China's tune, other than make them even angrier.

Not bowing down to their pressure, is about all we can do. We're actually not playing nice with them. If we were, she'd be back in China.

Have Trudeu wear a Cheongsam maybe that will show the Chinese.

I haven't heard anyone saying she should be tortured. She shouldn't be afforded the luxury of house arrest. Put her in a shitty prison that run of the mill folks have to deal with. Restrict access to her lawyers and consular services, until China treats the Canadians in a just manner.

Canada is not a small fry country with little world influence. Canada can do a whole lot more. An Indian style boycott, restricting visas, clamping down on Chinese soft power in Universities are all things Canada can do.

we could tell China that its no longer allowed to buy up property here......that would be a good start....

Maybe the Chinese will cringe so hard that they surrender.

We don't discriminate based on nationality or ethnicity. If we allow Americans or British to purchase properties here, then we have to allow Chinese buyers too. We have this thing called Charter of Rights and Freedom. It's good stuff really. Muricans should learn sometimes.

15. (1) Every individual is equal before and under the law and has the right to the equal protection and equal benefit of the law without discrimination and, in particular, without discrimination based on race, national or ethnic origin, colour, religion, sex, age or mental or physical disability.

annnnnnnnnnnd that somehow = we should let any one country((Especially one we have very bad relations with currently)) buy up a shocking amount of real estate in our country??

we have the charter of rights and freedoms so that means we HAVE to sell our country away fairly to everyone! .......lol..............

You can forbid foreign buyers from purchasing property or impose taxation on such activities. You cannot, however, impose such a ban or tax specifically against certain nationality or ethnicity. That means the law has to apply equally. You seem to demonstrate a lack of understanding on how Section 15 works.
