Media Chris Weidman compares Alex Pereira to Ben Askren: ‘It’s such a deficiency in what we’ve seen so far’

One of the luckiest titlte run in history, the fact he defended that belt 3 times is nothing but a miracle.

The second he started to fight legit fighters on their prime he went 1-5.

The worst thing is not only he is delusional but also the fact he always show very little class despite his actions and cocky words, it's hard to sympathize with somebody like him.

If you're ever in the mood of trying to see The Weedman in another light I've got two interviews I can point you towards 👍

For the past year, I've been asserting that Pereira is a product of circumstances. When he faces a strong wrestler, even not an excellent fighter, just someone like Nikita Krylov, he'll be exposed big time. 40 years old jan post injury is the best grappler he faced and fight was close. He just needs to face a physically strong guy with relatively good grappling, and he'll be toasted

How does this make any sense?? A guy like Krylov? He already faced Jan who's a solid grappler himself and he beat Jan. Using Kyrlov is not the best argument considering Jan submitted Krylov and outgrappled him.

You would have a better argument if you said Corey Anderson or Phil Davis, a high level mma wrestler. But not Krylov or Jan.

I like chris but this is not one of his better takes. Alex is special and if he was a pushover he wouldve been grapplefucked already
I can see both sides to this. If Pereira came to the UFC in an era with guys like prime Weidman/Chael/etc. at MW and Jones/Cormier/Davis/Bader/Rashad at LWH, he may never have never gotten a title shot.

But there's a lack of good wrestlers at MW (yeah, Khamzat but he's only had a few 185-pound fights) and LHW. And I agree with you, if Pereira's had literally no wrestling or ground game, like a striker in UFC 1, he would've lost by now. His grappling has been good enough so far and he's had time to improve it. But he did come to the UFC at a favorable time for strikers.

This is probably why the analysts like Cormier, Chael, and Smith seem to have a hate-boner for him.

I really wonder who has actually watched Alex fight. Seems like y'all have only seen the highlights.

From his first UFC fight, guys have attempted to grapple him plenty of times. He has good counter grappling. It has already been demonstrated. The guy trains with Glober. He's not incompetent. He's just more effective at striking than wrestling. I'm not an Alex rider, but damn, why was no one complaining about Izzy's lack of grappling? Or Anderson's lack of grappling?

Weidman is sounding like a casual and a hater.

Weidman should expose those holes in Alex's game by going up to 205 and showing us, he's been at the weight class before.
prime weidman fought against 2 of the best strikers in lyoto and silva

pretty sure lyoto and silvas wrestling skills are beyond of alexs

people laugh at him because hes not on his prime anymore
wait till u see pereiera starting to lose and gets exposed

Chris is speaking from a place of jealousy.

The facts are that Chris’ title defenses were against old men that recently deflated from USADA. Once Chris had to fight an elite guy his own age, he got pummeled.

Weidman fought in the golden era of MW. Those old men were better than Izzy and Pereiras competition.

At least Weidman was a dominant champ. Izzy almost beat Pereira 5-0 and if he finished that fight like he finished the reamtch Pereira would be in the PFL by now. Then he goes to split decision to KO'ing Jiri who thinks defense is boring and beating someone rushing back from an Achilles injury.

Who the fuck cares about wrestling credentials and shit. Not everyone has to be a boring cookie cutter collegiate wrestler that we've seen countless times, it's nice to have other styles for once. Alex has been taken down and proved he could recover back to his feet while taking minimal damage and defending submission attempts. Ben Askren can't survive 1 minute on the feet against any competent striker.

Who tf cares about kickboxing credentials and shit. Apparently a lot of people because it gets you title shots now.

Haterade at its finest.
Moreso I think he was very well suited at fighting guys were the threat of the takedown was effective.

He then fought a run of guys who were far less afraid of it and wasnt able to didctate the fights as well but still its not like they werent mostly competitive, if he doesnt attempt that kick vs Rockhold for example who knows how that goes?

Sounds like a good MMA fighter to me.
I don't think its just the case he was well suited to beating Anderson/Vitor as he beat Machida as well of course who had very good takedown defence.

Moreso I think it was he was best fighting at his own pace standing, fights were he could use the threat of the takedown to control the pace he did best in.

I think Chris meant to use a word like “divergence” instead of “deficiency”, but he has a vocabulary deficiency.

He was trying to point out how unique it is for someone to get so far by being such a specialists, in an era of MMA where it seems essential to be well rounded.

Unfortunately Chris is not very smart, and the way he delivered the message comes off as a slight of Poatan.

Panic wrestler beating mediocre striker after mediocre striker back-to-back: he's the GOAT! Undisputed!!!

High-level striker beating other strikers or generalists: he's a can! A fraud! He'll never beat a wrestler!!!
