Media Chris Weidman compares Alex Pereira to Ben Askren: ‘It’s such a deficiency in what we’ve seen so far’

Who tf cares about kickboxing credentials and shit. Apparently a lot of people because it gets you title shots now.
Alex is winning while Weidman has taken enough damage to kill 3 men. The fact that DC and Weidman feel the need to bring up wrestling on a constant basis is annoying. Alex is doing just fine with what he has. Not everyone needs to have a wrestling background in MMA, shit gets old af watching the same bs over and over again.

If Alex was as flawed as these critics say, then both Jiri and Jan would've submitted him in the first round. People who are comically deficient in an area of MMA like grappling get exposed and live in the prelims for the rest of their UFC career.

The only one hating is Weidman with his jealous comments on Pereira, fuck him.
Yeah he is hating on pereria but that don't got shit to do w his whole career you clap having jezebel

Alex had fine defensive grappling against Jiri, Jan and whoever that BJJ guy was that he fought early in UFC. He's not going to run into better grapplers at 205 anytime soon.
Ank is levels better than both at grappling

In other words, you just assume that based on where he's from and you've never actually seen him fight? He's another striker, another perfect matchup for Alex.

He's obviously right.

I've been on the Poatan bandwagon since before it was trendy. But facts are facts: he's had 8 UFC fights, 4 of which were title fights, and the best wrestler he's fought was a 40-year-old kickboxer (Jan). He's been matched VERY deliberately.

205 in the UFC has no wrestling talent, with Glover retiring Jan is arguably the best there.

Sick of this shit, they’re mad that their style has been exposed recently and can’t fathom that striking is more essential in fighting them wrestling is, as wrestling takes much more effort then striking does which makes what Periera does seem much more dominant then their own title reigns.

A dominant win in striking would be quick, while dominance in grappling is either a quick sub, but if not then it’s a 15 minute blanket.

I feel like Alex would have bulldozed straight through DC who overestimates his own chances as I didn’t see that many takedowns against Stipe who is less potent as a striker then Alex.

prime weidman fought against 2 of the best strikers in lyoto and silva

pretty sure lyoto and silvas wrestling skills are beyond of alexs

people laugh at him because hes not on his prime anymore
wait till u see pereiera starting to lose and gets exposed
Pretty sure that Poatan is as an accomplished striker as there has ever been in MMA, yes better than Anderson and Lyoto. Winning a title off Wilnis is more impressive than knocking out old man Randy, Forrest, or Vitor, as is winning two belts in the UFC with your striking alone. All fighters lose mate, Poatan has lost twice already, so you'll have to come up with some new goalpost to cry over eventually.

He’s not necessarily wrong, but it’s also not without precedent. Izzy and Anderson were similarly specialized strikers. Sure, Anderson had submissions but the blueprint to beat him was wrestling him to the mat. Fights start on the feet and as long as they stay there, Pereira is arguably the most lethal guy in the sport. He’s not just powerful but he’s superbly technical offensively and has demonstrated the ability to retain power and technique into the later rounds.

It comes down to an inherent insecurity within the MMA community relative to boxing. Pereira is a two division champ in the most prestigious MMA organization in the world but there’s a possibility that he’d lose a fight against Oleksandr Usyk because we don’t know if he could secure a takedown if things got hairy on the feet. Conversely, there wouldn’t be the same concern if Jon Jones were to welcome Usyk to the octagon and that’s more comforting for MMA guys.

Problem is who is this great wrestler at LHW?

If Alex was at WW or LW I’d be worried but he’s very much safe in LHW without Jones or DC in there.
Totally agree. There’s no one at LHW

Lol.

If Chris took his own logic and went out of his way to not be one dimensional, and instead ceased wrestling, he would have been slept well before he ever realised success.

Such an immensely stupid opinion.

Alex transitioned to a whole new sport in his mid-30’s and we are here whining and crying that he doesn’t have Eddie Bravo level jits.

So cringe.

Jiri subbed Glover.

Jan outwrestled Izzy.

Izzy turned into Randy Couture during the first MMA fight with Alex.

These guys can grapple, but for some reason, can’t against Poatan. Give the man his due…

Chris should not be talking

His first defence he won via Silva snapping his leg

Second defence was against non TRT Vitor

And third defence went the distance with post koed and submitted Loyoto

Now I'm waiting for Rockhold considering a return to the UFC in order to fight Pereira, telling us "once it hits the ground it's a walk in the park".

I do feel theres always been an insecurity in MMA to kickboxers moving in, any time anyone gets sucess we get the same old "he'll loose as soon as he fights a wrestler", sometimes its true of course but very often its not.

The flipside is I think MMA always falls in love with the idea of the super wrestler, the guy who will just blast though everyone and take them down, Bo Nickel is really the latest guy to get this kind of hype.
