Hall vs Penn

Just looking at the stats, that's the first time BJs been submitted in MMA.

Ryan hall as a style that bj has never seen before. I'd say that in pure Bjj a sub happens via leg lock.
Styles makes fights. Bj undoubtedly is great at Bjj but you can not learn to defend properly against a specialist in one training camp

GSP submitted him at UFC 94
C'mon man...

You know what he meant. BJ and/or his corner throwing in the towel after 4 rounds of brutal ground-and-pound from GSP is not the same as "getting submitted."

Ryan Hall is the first person to put BJ in a submission hold and make him tap out. That's clearly what @Vitamin C meant

People also calling Ryan Hall a specialist re: the leg lock stuff aren't wrong but I think a lot of people are underestimating his well roundness. Even most of his subs near the end of his grappling career 6-7 years ago were RNCs, darces, and armbars.

Hall said on TUF that leg locks weren't even really his best skill set and anyone on this board that has ever rolled with him will back that up. He can and will fuck you up with a lot of different things. He's played a smart strategy but I hope he stays in the UFC long enough or gets the right fight to show some of the people that aren't familiar that he can do more than leg lock people.

He said he looked over the stats, I think the GSP fight is labeled as tko-

GSP made BJ quit or submit after BJ said it was to the death and he was going to try to kill him and all that junk.

I know he didn't tap him out but what he did should not be overlooked.

Beating a dude until his corner quits is quite the accomplishment, and GSP sure put the hurt on BJ in that fight, but BJ has been beaten by others too. Corner stoppage or ref stoppage, it's someone else making the decision for a fighters safety cause the fighter can't or won't.
Hall made BJ tap, in the round, with a hold. He won with jiu jitsu. Something not many people can say regarding a fight with Penn.

He is a master at triangle and catching the guillitione as well .Its funny people think he’s a one trick pony .He made a name for him self by triangling everyone coming up in BJJ ranks .

I agree but I'd say BJ quit. You obviously can't hear the conversation but you can see his body language slumped against the fence. When they called it there was no argument from him. They probably asked if he wanted to continue and he said no. He quit regardless, if he wanted to keep fighting he would have found a way. All of his behaviors showed he wanted out.

A ref stopping a fight because of a cut or because of strikes or something is different. Especially if the fighter is arguing to keep fighting.

"It's to the death Georges. I'm going to try to kill you in there and I'm not joking about this.". BJ penn actual quote

GSP-. "That's cute" or something similar and beats him into submission

True or nah?

Leg locks are what makes him scary in mma. I don't think he triangles anybody in mma. Havinf even a 100% triangle finish isn't a game changing threat in mma.

Ryan is a leg lock specialist. That doesn't mean he can't be an arm bar specialist or rnc specialist as well.

Ryan has a leg lock game that is rare in mma. His other skills arnt as rare.

Beating a person into "submission" just isn't the same in my opinion. I'm talking about winning via jiu jitsu. You're playing with semantics.

Fair enough.

I was at a Danaher seminar a couple years ago where he went over in detail how they dealt with Penn's guard. He definitely won via Jiu Jitsu.

I get what you're saying though, happy new year!

I definitely would never disagree with the bolded.

I will say there are people that are specialists with moves that will say Ryan does things with them that they haven't seen before (for example what Jeff Glover says about Ryan Hall with the darce choke and the triangle choke).

I'll shut up but my overall point is that I hope the BJJ crowd doesn't assume Ryan only has leg locks to work with out there.

I agree. Ryan is a true Bjj master
