When we were kids the older kids would use their influence and not to mention pre social media kids would loiter outside and wander around.


But now kids are on their phone. It doesn't seem like it would be easy to find local kids to join gangs.

Gangs dont recruit by hanging around the mall and offering people smokes or whatever it is you see on TV/cartoons. Gangs recruit by finding children and young adults who have fractured or abusive family lives, or perhaps have mental instability from mental health or substance abuse issues, and offering them a community/family/sense of purpose that their gang family allegedly provides. Of course most of this is psychological manipulation by existing victims or gang leaders with psychopathic tendencies.

Social media and online behaviours probably just make this easier
