IBM has just upended the chip world with 2nm production the US is back!!!

Fun fact AMD just signed a 1.8 billion dollar deal with New York based GlobalFoundries who is a partner with IBM and the work they are doing with 2nm chips. Cannot always put your eggs in one TMSC basket.

Global Foundries had problems making 7nm and pulled out. How the heck are they going to go down to 2nm?
And when TSMC is the only one that makes the basket for your eggs, yes you can.

bruh.

it's specifically for 12nm and 14nm - and it explicitly nixes their exclusivity to glofo at those, as well.

lolz @ thinking amd is leaving tsmc for glofo - they've BEEN using glofo since glofo existed.

and it's likely that this is more about xilinx, anyway.

They are not LEAVING TSMC they are playing the field. TSMC even stated they are planning to build an additional 12 billion dollar chip factory in Arizona. Do you know why?

They want a shot at that sweet 52 billion from the US government. Like lol they really think the US government going to throw them 12 billion?

This is a transformation of US investment in chip development. After TSMC announced a 12 billion additional an US 52 billion South Korea announced a 450 billion dollar plan towards making South Korea a chip giant.

This is huge for IBM an US as little been talked about.

You read to many hack stories not the reality many changes have happened post IBM announcement of 2nm chips. Players are lining up for the next round in chip design.

TSMC is working on their own 3nm chip design. But IBM put the US back on the map in a big way.

...bruh.

since you didn't get it with the previous post... they didn't sign a new deal with glofo. they amended their current agreement. and it's now open-ended (glofo no longer has exclusivity for 12nm+). you have this all wrong.

and yes - tsmc (and samsung) are building fabs in the usa. we've said this for months. no idea why you think it's a mere $12B, though.

Because

"TSMC is the world's most advanced chip-maker, and its investment plans are being closely watched amid a global chip shortage and new initiatives in the U.S. and Europe to subsidize semiconductor production. TSMC announced last year that it would invest $10 billion to $12 billion to build a chip factory in Phoenix."
