International India Facing Healthcare and Economic Disaster from Second Wave of COVID

These are one of the things the Americans are good at forecasting and statistics and when you guys want to build shit it gets built big and huge.

I guess Modi really tried to politicize this and make it apear they have beaten the Pandemic but that is very naive and you cant hide those excess deaths and the people rushing the hospitals, they are not in a position to play these vaccine diplomacy game yet
Thankfully we have a bunch of POC women here to do all that ala Hidden Figures.

1 Million Covid deaths?

Damn Looks like India is the one who got hit so bad, but with very poor population living in slums and with Biliion compact population well its to be expected but shit 1 million?

This is fucking horrible. One my good friend’s is from India and her immediate family which is middle class well to do is fine but their friends and distant relatives are in horrific shape. The class system over there is like CA on steroids…

Any loss of life is tragic, but if there's a silver lining here, it's that the scam calls have slowed down significantly.

Is this normal for viruses to mutate like this?
from what the "experts" are saying, mutations are normal but they get weaker, the fear they have now is that if this was made in a lab, it'll get stronger instead of weaker.

There are around 4000 variants apparently.

i'm close with an Indian family, wonderful people, forgiving and tolerant to a fault. They are from an upper caste though and sometimes I can see it. Anyway, maybe their families will fare well. It's sad, all of it, and so unnecessary.

4000? where'd you hear that? A lot of people are resigned to the fact that we'll be saddled with this virus for a long time. Scary, but I know a smart, educated dentist who thinks it's all a scam and won't get the vaccine. A lot more people are going to die.

True dat! I plan to troll the scammers with Covid jokes once they pick up again.

Thousands given fake COVID vaccine shots in alleged scam in India
BY ARSHAD R. ZARGAR | JULY 5, 2021

New Delhi
— Indian authorities have arrested 14 people and cordoned off a private hospital as they investigate an alleged vaccination scam that purportedly saw thousands of people given shots of saline solution when they thought they were getting coronavirus vaccines. At least 2,000 people in the Indian financial capital of Mumbai and 500 in the eastern state of Bengal may have fallen prey to the elaborate scam, authorities said.

The alleged scammers are suspected of holding at least 12 private mass-vaccination sessions in May and June. They did not keep regional health authorities in the loop as they launched the vaccination camps. They're accused of filling used, empty bottles of real vaccine with the saline solution and administering the shots to anyone who showed up at the events.

Police first registered a case last month after some people who had been given the shots grew suspicious when they didn't see their vaccination certificates appear on the government's online portal, CoWin. Their suspicion grew when none of the people who attended the vaccination events reported any of the usual post-vaccination side effects.

The police have arrested 14 people, including some doctors, on fraud, criminal conspiracy and other charges. They also sealed the Shivam Hospital in Mumbai and arrested its owners, Doctor Shivraj Pataria and his wife Neeta Pataria, for their alleged role in the vaccination scam.

The hospital was an authorized COVID-19 vaccination center, but it didn't have permission to hold the mass-vaccination camps, which were staged in residential areas. They're suspected of refilling used vaccine vials from the hospital, which should have been destroyed.

"Many [of the] accused have confessed that they used saline water," Vishwas Nangre Patil, Mumbai's joint commissioner of police, told news outlets last week. He explained that more people could be arrested as the investigation was still underway.

The Bombay High Court called the apparent vaccination scam "shocking" and asked the authorities to ensure "innocent individuals are not duped in future."

So far at least 350 million of India's 1.34 billion have had at least a first dose of COVID-19 vaccine. The nationwide vaccination program has picked up pace following a devastating second wave of coronavirus infections in April and May, which crippled the country's health care services and left people dying on the streets.

It was bound to happen that they began to scam each other sooner or later. Rip to those that got bamboozled.

That makes no sense. Whatever “expert” is saying that, isn’t an expert.

Oof, I don't know if this macabre idea would fly anywhere outside India.

India built a park using the ashes of 6,000 people who died from COVID and it's a memorial to those who perished in the pandemic

Years from now when visitors happen upon a park in a corner of Bhopal City, India, they should tread lightly - because they'll be walking upon the resting place of some 6,000 COVID dead.

A 12,000-square-foot area of empty land is being converted into what the city plans to be a memorial and a lush burial ground for those who died during the COVID pandemic.

This is because the city's main Bhadbhada Vishram Ghat crematorium has completely run out of space to store the overwhelming amounts of uncollected ash from COVID victims, per Indian news organization Hindustan Times. The outlet estimated that 21 truckloads of the ashes, from over 6,000 people cremated from March 15 to June 15, will be used to develop the park.

The South China Morning Post spoke to crematorium manager Mamtesh Sharma, 51, who said the unclaimed ash at Bhadbhada Vishram Ghat was initially being stored in huge urns. However, the rate at which bodies are still being burned there has far outpaced the storage space available on the crematorium's premises.

"At the height of the second wave after we had been burning 100 to 150 bodies a day, we had to keep making space. We added more and more lockers in which we keep the urns. Once we made space for 500 lockers. Then we added another locker room. Now there isn't any space left, but we need space for other cremations," he told the SCMP.

Sharma also told the SCMP that he was unsurprised that so many ashes remained uncollected. Some family members took only some of the bones, but not the entire quantity.

It is also possible that some ashes remained unclaimed because there was no one left to collect them. Bloomberg reported in May that entire families were being wiped out by COVID, particularly in rural India. Meanwhile, New Delhi is facing a similar problem with piles of uncollected ash, but volunteers are choosing to scatter these sacks of cremated remains in the Ganges river instead of burying them.

Indian news outlet NDTV reported that the ashes would be placed on the land after being blended with a mixture of soil, cow manure, wood sawdust, sand, and other material. The park can accommodate anywhere between 3,500 and 4,000 plants, and its development committee is inviting people to come forward to plant saplings.

"We have urged the family members of those who lost their lives due to COVID-19 to participate in the plantation work. The management committee will take care of these plants till they grow into a tree," said Arun Choudhary, president of the Bhopal park building committee, to NDTV.

The central Indian state of Madhya Pradesh, within which the city of Bhopal is located, has reported 790,042 COVID cases to date and over 9,000 deaths.

India has recorded over 30 million COVID cases and over 400,000 deaths. The country in May had to contend with a serious surge in highly transmissible Delta variant cases in its devastating second wave - which overstretched its healthcare system, crippled its funeral service industry and resulted in bodies being disposed of in the Ganges river.
