Is Jones vs Stipe really a money fight?

Theres this narrative being spread that Jones is fighting Stipe because it's the money fight. Is it though? When Stipe was champion he wasn't that popular. His ppvs did between 300 to 400k buys. Completely average, even when heavily promoted.

Remember how how much marketing they did for Stipe vs Ngannou 1? This was when Dana said the infamous Ford Escort quote. The event only did 380k. Meanwhile UFC 295 just became the fourth highest grossing UFC event in history.

I think if you put Tom Aspinall in the UK it's the bigger fight. The entire MMA fan base acknowledges Jones vs Aspinall is the better fight to make.
Did you even read the article you quoted? I guarantee you didn’t even read the title of the article.

It is about the live gate at MSG. It literally has zero to do with ppv buys. And for all we know the people that bought those really expensive tickets for 295 bought them because Jones/Stipe was supposed to be the ME.

Just a really bad thread.

The gate for the last ppv was 4th in ufc history because of stipe / Jones before it got canceled.

What makes you think Aspinall is going to sell more than a known commodity, who's been around for a long time and can be promoted as one of the greatest heavyweights of all time?

Casuals don't know who aspinall is. I don't know how anyone could think he would sell more.

Sherdog doesn't represent the majority of fans.
Aspinall is actually riding some recent hype rather than not having won a fight in 3 years.

It’s 100% a cash grab for the company and the fighters that’s being sold to the public on ‘legacy’ alone. In reality, Stipe is way too old to beat Jones. Stipe may not believe this but his long hiatus from the sport, at his age, is going to be a lot different than returning from one at a younger age. Especially when faced with a faster, younger and much more tactical opponent in Jones. Stipe is going to be destroyed. Stipe may not even be able to beat someone like Almeida or Gane if I am being honest,

You brought up some good points, like Tom Aspinall becoming a big star if he dethrones Jones, and Stipe not being able to sell much more based on past PPVs.

I guess for the UFC, even after retirement, Jones would still be a valuable asset. The UFC would probably focus a lot on Jones retirement, and claims that their company employed one of the greatest fighters in history. If Jones did get KTFO Jones stock would drop, maybe some people would see him as never that good etc.

Jones has been in the UFC over the decade, even in retirement they can still milk money out of him through merchandise etc

Definitely not anymore. Aspinall vs either would be much bigger.

Youre not asking if Jones Stipe is a money fight, you're trying to pretend pose that Aspinal is.

Jones and Stipe are the biggest names at HW (if not the sport)

Aspinanile has had ONE PPV which he got on as a replacement for, Jones vs Stipe

No one knows who the hell his is. Pav was the great hope/Jones killer last week.
