Because the modern lifestyle promoted in both are not condusive to raising families. To successfully raise families in consistent numbers, you need someone focused on running a home. Traditionally tgis was the mother and the mans wages were high enough to allow this. Now both the man and woman need to work, the women is manipulated to be a careerist like a man and motherhood and stay at home moms are denigrated and devalued. This is the result. The west at least has immigrants but japan doesnt have that either.

The simple reality is that the economics no longer make single earner households appealing unless one parents is making $150k+. You're not buying a big house, driving a nice car and saving for college/retirement on a single income. And that's what most people want. The trappings of material success.

Just to put it in real world numbers. The average home in 1960 was ~1200 sq.ft. By 2014, it was more than double that. Obviously, if the size of the homes is doubling, the wages necessary to buy and maintain that home have to double as well...but they haven't. So, 2 incomes. And it becomes a self-sustaining cycle. 2 incomes to buy a bigger house so builders build bigger houses to make more money which then requires 2 incomes to afford.

There's more to it than that but manipulated women isn't part of the story.

Yeah I won't pretend to know the whole country. I travel a lot here buy my central base is Gunma. Very aging population with old infrastructure. Beautiful place but I get the feeling people leave because they don't wanna do actual work (farming, etc).

I just TODAY got offered 100k yearly + own free beautiful house for: work 10 to 12 hours a day all summer and have 4 months off in winter.

I don’t really see them so much where I live. I know in Roppongi, there are a lot of Nigerian “doormen” for night clubs etc. However, my Roppongi days are well and truly over at this stage!

I often see a lot of people from Thailand, Philippines, Vietnam, Chinese, Nepalese, but they all seem pretty nice, friendly and law abiding.

I definitely appreciate being able to walk the streets at night without fear of being attacked. Growing up in London, England, you were not always able to do that.

It annoys me when people bang on about the economy. I don’t care about the “economy” or “the GDP”, “competing with China” (whatever that means!) …. I want a safe place to live! You can’t put a price on that!

What you said is definitely true but "empowered" careerist woman is definitely a part of it. The expectation of a woman is to get a career, get high position in the career and put off marriage if necessary to do it. If you do have a kid, the kid gets institutionalized by daycare/school/the internet. Mom and dad are too busy trying to be careerists or busting their ass to be mortgage slaves for a house they mostly only sleep in. Thats if mom decides to stay otherwise she takes half of dad's shit and the narrative switches to 'i dont need no man' powerful single mom who is still bringing home boyfriends at 35.

Not disagreeing with the living the single income life simply pointing out that the norms of society have changed to such a degree that many things now require two incomes to be affordable.
