International Julian Assange arrested in London

I think people like Julian Assange, Wikileaks, and whistle blowers are necessary now more than ever. They're currently the only form of checks and balances we currently have to hold our world leaders accountable. Many things released by Wikileaks over the years were outright denied by our government before they were exposed! I'm as pro American as anyone else but Snowden is a hero in my book! He proved the NSA was doing exactly what they had been denying for years, going as far as stating doing such activities would be a violation of law and against our personal freedoms!
And it's sad to watch us cheer on and invite our own oppression.

This movie is playing out like 1984 meets V for vendetta with tinges of Idiocracy.

if a foreign spy gets caught in an act of espionage, then laws need to lay out how that situation is to be handled.

I think having such laws is necessary, but they should be more carefully worded so that their use is limited to actual cases of espionage.

Well the U.S. can assert jurisdiction over anyone who breaks U.S. law.

Just the US? Because God said so? Or can some shithole Muslim country charge me for saying Islam sucks and Mohammed can eat cock, even though I said it in the USA?

He's being charged with knowingly soliciting classified information, working on behalf of a foreign state to interfere in our elections, etc...

Then ring Trump up right now. He solicited Russia for stolen emails. Open and shut case.

If you're stealing things from American sources then you're breaking U.S. law and we have jurisdiction over that. If you're just opposing the U.S. but without directly engaging with our assets or personnel then it's trickier.

The complaint, which I'm only partially through, alleges that Assange worked with Manning to access specific documents. If true, the allegation moves him from simply running a publishing site to actively engaging in theft of U.S. secrets.

What would it look like for an American journalist to commit espionage against Iran?

Any country can and most do. So yeah, if some Islamic shithole attempted to charge you with blasphemy over a sherdog post, they could. Whether or not they could ever actually arrest you, is another thing. Best not to travel anywhere that has an arrest warrant for you.

Tons of nations do this. Most of the times we charge people abroad with terrorism related charges, they haven't actually set foot in, or taken a concrete action in the United States. This isn't a novel thing.

Certainly a step up from the password hacking charge.

Yes, as usual might makes right. If I'm on the jury it's not guilty. He's either a journalist of a whistle-blower. One's protected Constitutionally and the other is just someone it's smart to protect.

Thanks for your insights.

He wasn’t involved in espionage. Someone leaked information to him, and he published it.

JOurnalists and news media do this all the time. But this is not controlled st all, so powers that be wanted it gone for a long time.

WikiLeaks basically proves our american nation is the evil empire. Going out and inventing reasons to murder around the globe to further political desires.

it could be espionage, if it turns out that Assange has been an asset of the Russian government all along.

if a clear link exists between WikiLeaks and Russia (and there is proof of this) then Assange has arguably been engaged in spy games.

He is acting like the New York Times publishing classified info when their reporters get a scoop.

If it’s freely given to Assange, Assange isn’t guilty of anything but running afoul of the most powerful people in America who want their scalp.

the grand jury might agree with you

or they might not

LONDON, June 17 (Reuters) - British interior minister Priti Patel on Friday approved the extradition of WikiLeaks' founder Julian Assange to the United States to face criminal charges, bringing his long-running legal saga closer to a conclusion.

Assange is wanted by U.S. authorities on 18 counts, including a spying charge, relating to WikiLeaks' release of vast troves of confidential U.S. military records and diplomatic cables which Washington said had put lives in danger.

Patel's decision does not mean the end of Australian-born Assange's legal fight which has been going on for more than a decade and could continue for many more months.

He can launch an appeal at London's High Court which must give its approval for a challenge. He can ultimately seek to take his case to the United Kingdom Supreme Court. But if an appeal is refused, Assange must be extradited within 28 days.

It will be interesting if he arrives in the US early fall.

Pardoning/not pardoning him would be an intesrting talking point as we get closer to the midterms.

America is forever cucked by the political class if we allow Julian Assange to be 'suicided' or put away forever, going after the journalist revealing the corruption and war crimes rather than those responsible for them.

He armed the enemy the moment he leaked classified information.
The enemy was the US govt the moment they were authorizing illegal actions.
Corrupt govts must be held accountable.

Assange has now been in custody for five years. The extradition wrangling continues but:

US President Joe Biden has said that he is considering a request from Australia to drop the prosecution of WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange.

The country's parliament recently passed a measure - backed by PM Anthony Albanese - calling for the return of Mr Assange to his native Australia.

The US wants to extradite the 52-year-old from the UK on criminal charges over the leaking of military records.

Mr Assange denies the charges, saying the leaks were an act of journalism.

The president was asked about Australia's request on Wednesday and said: "We're considering it."

The measure passed the Australian parliament in February. Mr Albanese told MPs: "People will have a range of views about Mr Assange's conduct... But regardless of where people stand, this thing cannot just go on and on and on indefinitely."

Mr Albanese on Thursday said Mr Biden's comments were эencouragingэ and he was эincreasingly optimistic about an outcomeэ. "We want Mr Assange to be able to return home," he told Sky News Australia.

Sharing classified information is not journalism, anyone in possession of classified information that doesn't have the proper clearance is committing a crime. Assange is a POS. The sexual charges/stuff is drummed up BS though.

Not if that classified information is a crime against the American people. Then he's a whistleblower.
