I gave it a 6 only coz it's probably one of the most overplayed and ovverated ballads ever written in rock.......just like Smoke on the Water (DP) and Don't fear the Reaper (BOC): Mind you, I love Zep, but I prefer their harder side like Black Dog !!!!!

It wasn't the butt of a joke in Wayne's World because it was so-so. It's hung around getting massive play in popular culture all this time for a reason. It's a masterpiece. Whether or not it's your favorite song to listen to, it's nothing something I sit down and turn on to hear, one still must recognize this.

No masterpiece at all frankly speaking. Musta been some moron chick in heat who spread the news around it being a "masterpiece"....sorry if I'm so blunt and I know very well that music is subjective, BUT there are thousands of ballads out there which are overlooked when talking about REAL masterpieces.
I don't believe it, but there are experts who swear STH was ripped off another artist by Led Zeppelin ....ever heard of this ???!

What I really remember is when Whole Lotta of Love hit the radio.

Also, I was doing air guitar to Black Sabbath's Sweet Leaf when it came out.

The court says he didn't, but the Spirit song is so damned close, was written first, the bands played together before Stairway was "written", and Zep was recorded playing one of Spirit's other songs so they liked the band. Hell, Plant was found guilty of ripping off the lyrics of Whole Lotta Love and had to pay through the nose so it isn't exactly a stretch. I personally think Stairway is one of the greatest rock and roll recordings ever, second only to Jimi Hendrix's cover of All Along the Watch Tower, but Page should have credited Spirit for part of the writing.

It’s very good but I think there is some element of “you had to be there” to appreciate in its full glory. There weren’t a lot of songs like that or hit radio songs of that length when it came out.

For me, I’ve never ranked it among the best Led Zeppelin songs. There’s a few songs on that album alone I like more than Stairway.
