Both these guys have highlight reel finishes and look very good vs other opponents, but match them together and what happened was always going to be quite likely.

You have Gane who likes to pick apart his opponents from range. You have Francis who has crazy power and usually fights in bursts.
You mix them together and one outcome, the outcome last night is, Gane picks away at Francis, but never gets anything that effective off because he doesn't want to be in the danger zone too long which would give Francis an opportunity to land. Anything Gane does land doesnt really hurt Francis cause of his chin.
So it becomes a very cautious fight, Francis doesn't want to get too sloppy and start to get lit up, Cyril doesn't want to make any mistakes and get caught, or stay in range too long.

Then later on as they get tired and sloppy, and Francis changes tact and goes for wrestling, you have what played out. It didn't look flashy, it wasn;t technical, but if Gane even slips up for a moment in that grappling and lets Francis land some consecutive blows its probably over.

all these stupid posts saying the fight was trash, francis sucks etc, just clueless.

I'm talking this post in particular, the guy has a 2002 join date, how can you be that clueless with a 2002 join date. how.

But thats half of what you'd expect from here

This place is, and always has been, full of morons

Watching the sport for a long time or having an old account doesn't mean all that much. People with naturally low IQs are going to occasionally think and say stupid things their whole lives, it doesn't matter how long they've kept up with a sport

The fight wasn't nearly as bad and to give Ngannou shit when he realistically should not have fought, considering his injuries, is ridiculous.

The problem is there is no middle ground on Sherdog.

It seems a fairly even split between ‘Fedor is the greatest forever!’ and ‘generic hypetrain of the month is GOAT (after three fights)!’.

With a lot of emotional investment.

I wasn't expecting how the fight played out, probably nobody was, but neither was I expecting a barnburner. Seriously, what were people thinking would happen between a guy who like to keep his distance and a guy who relies mostly on counterpunching?

I just hope Gane learns the lesson that Francis learned from his first Stipe fight...no matter how effective a striker you are, you better brush up on your wrestling knowledge.

The fight was way more important than just a contest, and for that, I enjoyed it very much!

Nothing you said makes it a good fight, you just gave excuses for why it was boring.

The only thing that made it less boring at the time was thinking any minute one of them could open and take some chances, but they never did. Certainly not a fight anybody's going to want to re-watch.

The head strike count was 15-9 for a 5 round fight. For reference, Woodley vs Maia is pretty well recognized as one of the worst title fights, and the head strike count for that was 40-23.

Do you know Francis leg were compromised right...? He could not move properly because of a torn ACL

Give it up for Francis for his wrestling/grappling, didn't expect that. I expected pretty much everything to happen less and except the wrestling aspect, figured Gane would get the takedowns and a late submission but Ngannou showed how strong he is.

That said, Demopoulos/Juarez was a damn fun 3 minute fight, Frevola/Valdez was damn fun as long as it lasted, Maddalena/Rodriguez was brutal, give it up for Rodriguez for taking it short notice. Morales looked pretty damn good against Miles and will be fun to keep an eye on.

No need to get so riled up about it, nor pretend that your opinion is superior and that all others are idiots. I'll match whatever keyboard knowledge you have about MMA with my own (knowledge and actual experience) any day of the week. Both fighters exposed something that, as you would say, any *real fan* would know: that HW grappling is very, very low level, clearly even at the highest of rankings. They were decade-old WMMA-quality grapplers because they never really needed to rely on it. We had panic shooting, panic submission attempts, slow-motion white-belt BJJ, glacial sweeps (and attempts). Gane was (rightfully) scared of Ngannou's power, and like you say, Ngannou was himself overly cautious, and then slowed down. Sorry, but these things add up and make for a lame fight, and highlight big deficiencies in skill (relative to all other MMA weight classes) in big areas of MMA. And for that to be your IC and reigning champs isn't a good look, or at least shouldn't be twisted to be one.

I enjoyed pretty much every scrap on that card and very much the Main and Co-Main.

Single fights seldom prove anything.

That being said, Gane is as good of a striker as *any* heavyweight ever.
If by fighter you mean runner, yes! If Reebok was still here he would get a running shoe deal by now.

jokes aside Francis is an all time talent
