Sweden bows to fan power and becomes first country to reject VAR

Scandinavian country’s FA has change of heart after majority of clubs and regional associations vote against the use of technology even in European competitions

Sweden has become the first country to reject the introduction of VAR after opposition from a majority of elite clubs.

The Swedish FA president Fredrik Reinfeldt

had said a year ago that 'VAR was our future' but he has now backed down and said he respected the majority opinion. Sweden is not expected to come under pressure from Uefa to use the system for European competitions either.

The move reflects Swedish clubs having at least 51 per cent fan ownership, and VAR has been very unpopular with supporters in the country. The introduction has been opposed by 18 of the top 32 clubs, while two of the regional associations in Sweden have also come out against it.
