For the past 4 years I've been choosing an artist or band and listening to their entire discography in order. I save all the songs I enjoy for future listening. A lot of the bands are out of my wheelhouse.

One category I really havent listened to much is Country. The only ones I've listened and enjoyed to are Johhny Cash, Hank Williams, Hank III and Dixie Chicks (no homo).

What are some artists/bands with good catalogs to check out. I really hate that save a horse ride a cowboy type crap though.

You can't go wrong with Townes Van Zandt IMO. One of the best songwriters of all time.

i don't know much about country music myself, but Townes Van Zandt is great, and Waiting Around to Die is amazing:

haven't listened to much of his stuff, but this cover of Nirvana's In Bloom by Sturgill Simpson is great:

and Dwight Yoakam is really nostalgic for me for some late 80s/early 90s sort of pop-country (and i don't mean that derisively):

Not exactly right down the middle of the Country genre, but here you go.

What kind of country music are you looking for? Lyrical stuff, or just smooth sounding? Personally, for country artists, I find the women to be more a little more approachable because their voices just sound so damn good. You got your Loretta Lynn, Patsy Cline, Sandy Rogers, etc. Just pure ear porn. Don't be ashamed of the "Dixie Chicks". They've got some undeniably tight harmonies.

As for the men, I pretty much start and end with Johnny Cash. He covers it all.

He also has a bunch of downright hilariously disgusting songs, most are great for driving though after a night out

Well if you're going to pick one artist and work your way through their discography, you should start with Willie Nelson. He's releasing his 70th studio album in April.

But seriously it would help if you gave a little more information. Just like all genres, there are a lot of different kinds of country.

Kind of hard to go wrong with Brooks. Yah, he has some duds but he has a ton of good songs, and a decent length library.

You could also dive deep into the rabbit hole that is Dark Country as well, not many bands with multiple albums but there is a lot of them.

Oh, and Bourbon Crow. Fronted by the lead singer of the goth metal band Murderdolls. The songs are very.... uhh... different. But it's pure outlaw country.

Kris Kristofferson
White Buffalo
Rolling Stones (not kidding)
Cash, obviously
Shooter Jennings
Townes, ya, like has been said. cant sing for shit, but still great.

Gram Parsons
Giant Sand
Isobel Campbell and Mark Lanegan made a couple of excellent records together

Waylon Jennings

Also the supergroup the Highywaymen which features legends of Outlaw Country Willie Nelson, Johnny Cash, Waylon Jennings, and Kris Kristofferson

Lady Antebelum? One of their songs was playing on the radio in Filipino.

Shania Twain? Only song I know of hers was used in a Japanese drama.

Emmylou Harris has a catalogue going back to when I wasn't even born. I rarely listen to country these days, but when I do it's usually Emmylou Harris.

Not really country is more bluegrass... But the dead south is very good. Also if you like country from other countries i recomend tiao carreiro e pardinho ( thats brazilian country music ) ranchera mexicana has some good guys as well
