Rocky got lots of love because it was competing against heavy shit (Network, All the Pesidents Men, etc) that the academy wanted to take a break from the heft. After all, the country was still in the tail end of a mindfuck that was Watergate.

We needed something a bit more innocent to watch at the movies. We needed a story to help the American psyche.
