What the 24 year old 135 pound boxing champ told the mma hour last week in response to Sean calling him out:

“I mean, obviously [I laugh when I hear it], because it’s totally different,” Haney said to The MMA Hour. “Whenever the MMA guys come over to boxing, it’s not good for them, and it’s never going to be good for them. And the same, I don’t disrespect the MMA guys because it’s just a different sport. I know that I can’t compete with those guys in the cage. But when it comes to the boxing ring, they can’t compete with me. So it’s just two totally different styles of fighting.”

“It’s not the best thing for Sean O’Malley to get into a boxing ring with me,” Haney said. “It’s just, it’s not. It won’t be competitive. It won’t be competitive. But I respect him in the cage, what he does in the cage. He’s a hell of a fighter in the cage. But when you step into that square circle, the boxing ring, it’s a totally different thing.”

O'Malley would get sonned, you aren't gonna see 99% of MMA guys have the level of success Ngannou just had because they don't have that freaky Ford Escort power like him to help make up for the skill gap.

Having said that, maybe if he gets a title defense or two under his belt the UFC may be more receptive to him seeking opportunities like this outside the UFC itself.

Its the power and also divisions. Boxers at the weight class range Haney in isnt the same as HW boxing.

Talent in HW boxing is just as poor and shallow as HW MMA.

Lucas Browne was 6-2 in MMA and went and won WBA title in boxing beating Chagaev. Jans training partner Izu Ugonoh was a top boxing HW prospect ranked top 15 at his peak when he was 17-0. Now he is 1-2 in MMA.

Dillian Whyte and Jarrell Miller were noname kickboxers who turned to boxing and became top 10 ranked. Shit like all the above isnt happening in boxing LW division some of the deepest talent.

Haney is a great athlete and a really good boxer. He is a notoriously shitty finisher in boxing but hed knockout Sean badly.

Heavyweight is a different story. The skill level is lower there.
Joshua as well as others started late, they make up for it with physical attributes.

Ngannou did great no question. He has an iron chin and long reach. Also good power in some punches. His left looked great.
And him doing so good in southpaw was also astonishing, as well as his defense.

This is up there with Ronda Rousey's boxing being good enough to compete with Mike Tyson. Absolute lunacy.
Haney would turn Sean inside out.
And I'm a Sean fan.

Combat sports are strange. Youtuber Jake Paul has destroyed UFC legends while Francis gave Tyson Fury a run for his money.

Remember before Conor when champions used to defend their belts in their divisions 2-3 times per year? When this champ champ shit wasn’t a thing? When the goal was to become the champion of your weight division? When people didn’t pick and choose, rank squat, and try to get money fights? When for the most part fighters weren’t complete lowlifes talking massive shit about eachother on SM with no intentions of ever fighting the people they were talking shit about? When everybody and their dog didn’t talk about going to boxing?

Conor changed the game alright. For the worse.

But now we have to put “entertainment” before “sport”.

It just depends on who it is and how well trained in boxing they are, outside of MMA. Even Francis started out training in boxing only before deciding MMA was probably better for him.

The guy that beat Conor in Cage Warriors and fought in the UFC for a while, Joe Duffy was a pro boxer (7-1 record or something) in between some years of MMA.

The LW guy from PFL that's fighting Olivier Aubin-Mercier for the million dollar title thing, Clay Collard. He was a pretty good boxer who was wrecking some prospects in boxing a couple years ago, before getting signed to PFL and doing MMA again.

I don't think O'Malley is necessarily one of those guys and will probably get starched against any of the killers he's calling out. But there's some guys out there who can box. I'll bet Sean Strickland would do pretty well in the squared circle. He's got weird angles and tricks these fundamentally sound boxers aren't used to, plus a gas tank and a pretty good chin (not counting Alex Pereira. lol).

No. The lower weight classes are a different game. You wont see some 135lb elite boxer turning up rocking a Fury dad bod. The average level of skills and athleticism are totally different, which makes it much harder to transition into, that applies to both sports.

Also, I am tired of MMA fighters going to boxing anyway. Its a less interesting form of combat and a waste of their talents. We need these pay issues to be resolved to stop this shit finally.

No. Haney would make him look so silly and O'Malley's power wouldn't translate.

Ngannou hit Fury clean with power and didn't even hurt him.

Didn't O'Malley also call out Tank before? lmao

I hope it never happens, but if any mma fighter ends up fighting someone like Crawford, Tank, Naoya or Beterbiev, all of you will quickly realize just how bad HW boxing is in this era.

The only one Jake Paul destroyed was Askren who is definitely not a ufc legend.
