I suspect what would actually happen is the threat of Aliens and the need for "unity" would be used to push though existing conflicts much more aggressively, whats a little local genocide compared to saving the human race? Greedy sociopaths won't stop being that with the threat of Alien invasion.

I don't know about the universe, but I would agree that it is highly likely we are the smartest thing within the distance a living being could travel in a lifetime and survive the trip.
