Why did UFC create an Interim Champ Belt for Aspinall-Pavlovich?

Was it a mistake to have an interim HW belt?

UFC needs a Hardcore Title.

Any weight, any time, any place. Just need a ref to appear from somewhere to make it official.

people butthurt over Aspinall potentially defending the interim title.. you might want to look up the definition of 'INTERIM TITLE'.

They cared more about beefing up the 295 PPV with another title fight rather than giving much thought on what the plan for the interim title would be after that night lol.

Same reason there's ever an interim belt - because the true champion was injured and unable to defend the title, so this keeps (or is supposed to keep) the division moving in the meantime.

And if nothing else, it secures for Aspinall the #1 contender spot regardless of activity or rankings, so there's also that.

Did Jones getting injured and not being able to defend his belt for well over a year not show up in your feed? Because that 🤦‍♂️

I thought the projection at the time was that Jones would be out for at worst a year, and likely under it. No matter, it still doesn't explain why the interim was put on so hastily. And that came down to re-beefing up the card so there's more shiny gold on the poster and less angry customers demanding their exorbitant ticket costs back.

It's not a mistake to create an interim if the champ is going to be out a year but it is a mistake not forcing the champ to unify. But the big mistake was not having Stipe fight the alternate, Pavlovich. That would have solved everything.

Because they overcharged for their MSG card as it was supposed to be Jones' retirement fight. They couldn't justify the costs without another title fight.

Where they fucked up is they randomly made Pav/Aspinall the replacement fight instead of Stipe/Pav as had literally already been agreed upon. Now we're stuck where they never actually determined the "true" #1 contender as Stipe never won or lost.

Because they don’t want you to ever think the fighter is the star of the show , the belt is the most important thing , the organization is the star.
They are so adamant about this that when Masvidal fought Diaz they invented some bullshit belt to take part of the spotlight

The alternative was to 1) Strip Jones or 2) Have no heavyweight title fights for a year. They didn't want to strip Jones.

{<huh}

Why do the dumbest posts without fail always come from you? Stipe was never the number one contender. He hasn't won a fight in 4 years.

Word coming out of Aspinalls camp he is fighting Brock Lesnar next.

Why did they make that fight an Interim Championship bout? Was this a good or bad idea? Please tell us what you think and why.
It's very simple.
Jon pulled out.
They had a obligation to have a title fight for that Venue.

Wait till you find out what the original title fight was and who the contender involved was.

the answer is always money. now stop with these questions.

Jones never pulled out for injury. Jones is their best seller besides Conor. Clearly better business to have their 2nd best seller as champ for his last PPV. Imagine if Jones didn't retire as champ, kind of sucks the wind out of it. Besides they are losing out on 1 Aspinall fight for it. It's not the end of the world. End of the day if you were running a promotion you'd choose to keep Jones as champ vs Aspinall losing 1 extra fight as champ.

Jones coming back still isn’t certain though. He only wants to fight 41 Stipe and so both need to be available if and when the time comes. I wouldn’t be shocked if it doesn’t and Tom is promoted to full champ status.
