WTF happened to VICE News?

Such a shame.

Russian Roulette dispatches and Selfie Soldiers by Simon Ostrovsky about the initial invasion of Ukraine by russia in 2014 and 2015 were excellent. And VICE in general had some brilliant stuff.

Their episode on the Mexican mormon war was dope

How did they go woke?
Really? I mean, is there anything that would convince you that this once highly respected outlet, that covered interesting stories with no political slant, all of sudden went to shit, when they started hiring hyper progressives, and filtered their stories and articles through a hyper progressive lens, and essentially became a left wing activist outlet?

They've always had a political slant, they're an alt weekly.

How does an alt weekly operate without a political slant? Can you name alt weeklies without political slants?

No, they really didn't. They just did old fashioned reporting.

Look, you can deny it all you want. They went out of business because they turned off half of their audience with their left wing activist bullshit, while simultaneously spreading their wings too far. It's old news. They indeed went woke. They indeed went broke. Deal with it.

No they didn't lol. Do you even understand what an alt weekly is?

I've edited several vice stringers and staffers who have been working for decades. Almost all their content was inherently progressive because, again, alt weeklies are inherently political.

You seem to not even understand why Vice's finances went in the shitter because you are woefully ignorant of the media landscape or how the business operates.

lol that guy is absolutely seething that Vice is shutting down.

Indifferent. I wasn't a huge fan of gonzo for the sake of gonzo but they were among the last homes for a lot of investigative journalism, especially for local stories.

I speak from the perspective of someone who spent years working in media all across the ideological spectrum. Not as someone who is proudly ignorant and only interested in spinning events as battles in a ridiculous cultural war.

Sure thing. Nothing to do with the content on offer, and the vast difference between what they used to be and what they became. No Sir. It's everything but that one thing you don't want it to be, for some strange reason...

Stay in denial. I'm not doing this for pages and pages. Them going to shit over their content going to shit, due to hyper progressive politics being infused into the company, is old news. I don't care if you don't want to accept that people rejected their woke bullshit, and it cost them their existence. It is known. They were once on their way to becoming a media empire, and then seemingly fell apart overnight for reasons that are obvious to anyone but dishonest leftists in denial.

Content is always king, but most of Vice's downfall is structural. They went all in on digital because social media companies were swearing up and down that digital was the future, only for Vice to find out (like many other media outlets) how much of the sales pitch was bullshit. It's brutally hard to make money on digital content with ads, and the recession and covid destroyed a lot of the other ad sources, which were gobbled up by social media giants.

TLDR: Vice's valuation was always bullshit and way too high.

When was the last time Viceland made a profit, or Vice as whole?

Yep. Thanks. We're done here.
Ok, like I said wear your badge of ignorance with honor.

You can't even tell me something as basic as when the last time Vice was profitable. In other words, you have no frame of reference to determine when things started going bad, let alone why.

Shit, this is embarrassing given you're even Canadian. I love it when folks insist Vice used to be better but never even picked up an old school issue from them lol.

Yeeeees! I loved them too and was really invested in those series. Ostrovosky was doing a phenomenal job. IIrc he was later captured by seperatists and returned to his holding cell visibly traumatized. Is he still working as a Journalist?

No that is not what happened. They were already going out of business and couldn't get the same stories so they resorted to the left wing bullshit.

This is what happened.

Didn't the name "Vice" come from their counter culture gonzo journalism on drug use?
I can't say their original print media made it down under, but when I first became aware of them they were mostly known for their documentaries on drugs and drug culture.
There's no shortage of print media that has failed to transition to the digital age, so I can see how their initial success might have given them more prominence than they deserved.
Of course the story of counter culture becoming popular, commercialised, mainstream and then dying is nothing new either.
