Yoel was receiving at least $150K to show

For every dollar Yoel makes, UFC makes $10.
That’s why he wanted to be released. He knows he’s getting older, he needs to maximize his earning potential when he still has the chance.

A big name who is also a big earner and 43 years old. If he did pop it wouldn't be the first time, tainted supplements yada yada, and we don't know how long the suspension would be for.

Using your logic the organisation wouldn't be releasing a big named guy, who still has competitive fights at the top of the division, with 3 fights left on his contract.
Neither of you know the fight business you fucking dorks. None of you have ever made a dollar from or for an athlete.

Not even a Romero fan but ridiculous cut - $150K is fuck all for a perennial contender.

Guy is one of the best to not get the strap.

USADA probably was involved in the decision. It's a bad business move to cut a guy who can headline cards and sell PPVs for a measly $150k

Considering he gets robbed in every second fight. He was cheap for the ufc. saving 150k all the time

He's guaranteed twice that amount. He was making more then some defending champions.

Yoel is a great gatekeeper and I hate that he’s gone. There were plenty of good matchups for Yoel, I.e., Chimaev, and a Costa rematch.
Mm

He can't market himself, that's a ridiculous amount of money

This is quite a sum.

Was it worth it for the UFC? You decide...but probably they already decided, and came with a negative answer.

BTW good luck for him to find a new home with this salary...
Bellator can pay that, but will they go to that direction? They pay even more to Mousasi, Fedor, Wanderlei, Bader...will they want to pay this price to Romero? Who knows
Olympic medalist
Ripped
Charismatic
Meme worthy
Legit top 5

He is definetly worth it, but its clear the business strategy has shifted from developing a few marquee stars, to having a constant plethora of average 20k fighters.

That's fuckall for a dude who fights once or twice a year and brings people to watch.

No one is tuning in to watch Joe Scruggs vs div 1 wrestler b or laureli shoobadoo vs Shaniqua

I had Laureli Shoobadoo vs Shaniqua on the calendar though. Some people think Laureli just isn’t championship material but I think after the change of Zumba instructors and the new haircut she is easily top 5. Shaniqua has some hype too after gaining her 1000th subscriber for her unboxing videos. It can easily get FOTN if all other fights on the card are canceled due to covid.

Yoel Romero is a world class athlete and one of the most skilled fighters in his weight class in the biggest combat sports promotion on the planet. $150k to show is extremely low for a guy of his caliber to put his life on the line and fight. It’s an utter disrespect for the UFC to cut Romero because they believe they $150k to show is too much to pay a world class athlete. Romero deserves better.

That's poverty-level pay for the fighter he is

Not worth being a statue and fighting the last 10 seconds of a fight

One aspect to this which may be getting overlooked:

Romero's team: Manager, Translator, him personally. Drfinitely seem like major pains in the ass to deal with. If they were headaches or constant complainers/boat rockers, Dana and Co. probably relieved to jettison him

Did he ever get that 80-100 million from the supplement manufacturer that added juice on their product? I remember he won the law suit

There’s no way he only made a bit over 2 million. Then there’s gym fees and management

Dana White is worth half a billion dollars meanwhile fighters don't make shit. UFC will not last forever with this business model. 150k per fight for romero is a drop in a bucket. He is a house hold name. If a fighter fights once a year, 150k isn't shit to eat and train like a professional athlete and support a family.

What exactly do you think will happen?
The sport will get bigger, and they will pay the fighters a bigger percentage of the purse OR another multi billion dollar corporation or a group of investors will come along and create an organization that pays a lot better and steal their tallent.
