Im suprised so many people are on masvidal.. The way maia effortlessly strangled condit was a real eye opener(although condit did retire right after so maybe he wasnt 100% committed.) Maia has a VERY impressive resume as of late its really tough to go against him.
Condits takedown defense is worthless though. The commentators said during that fight that Condit had been working on ways to deal damage to Maia from the bottom instead of getting up. So he went in expecting to get taken down easy, a stupid gameplan to have against Maia. He was training on getting the better of the worst possible situation instead of avoiding it. Saw a bunch in here saying it was over because Masvidal was not focusing on jiujitsu, I think it's much better that he focuses on his wrestling. It's not like he does not know how to defend of his back, he got 10 years of experience. Doing a 10 week jiujitsu camp is barely gonna help him get an edge over someone like Maia. And defeding a submission is way easier that getting one, it's not like no one have survived a full round on their back against Maia, most of his opponents do. I think some hold too much value over Maias easy win against Condit.

spoiler bc i realize this athleticism rant is getting old
Ok but what point are you trying to make? You look at Jon Jones trying to dunk a basketball and go 'wtf' because he looks so much more athletic in the cage than he does while doing a movement he's not used to. But If Maia looked like that while trying to dunk, I don't think any of us would have a similar reaction because he doesn't do anything to lead us to believe he's a plus athlete.

Do you consider great designated hitters in baseball to be great/elite athletes? I feel as though that's something very comparable because, while it inherently involves coordination, strength, and speed, it's more of a skill than it is a feat of pure athleticism. Maia's quickness and explosion, or lack thereof, can potentially hinder his ability to get takedowns on some of the more athletically gifted fighters, there's no doubt about that. Maia, at least thus far at WW, has found a way to make his game effective in spite of that but his success as a grappler doesn't mean he's an elite athlete, at least when compared to other professional athletes

Not spoilering this cuz on my phone but if we are using explosiveness as the determining factor in athleticism I agree that at this point Maia is probably well below average compared to his peers. Age playing a big role (Again, see his throw vs a pretty prime Chael who was an elite wrestler). There's a level of subjectivity for sure.

If jj is constantly having to fight out of the clinch then she is constantly being backed up and pressured which is what andrade wants. Tough to win rounds on the backfoot and jj is not the type who can pick you off moving backwards. Jj wants this at range where she can use her physical advantages.

yeah for sure. JJ needs to move her feet and keep jabbing from range. I think she is smart enough to aim to do so. I will end up on JJ here I think when reduced comes out.

I don't disagree and that's where I think she'll create angles with that footwork. She knows that Andrade is stronger than her and won't let herself get against the fence. I really expect to see a lightening quick JJ here with high volume.

I dont agree. Not really seen that from jj. Shes a thai fighter they arent known for their fleet of foot and jj was not circling out effectively against claudia or kk. Whether she can succed in the clinch or not against andrade like she did with kk remains to be seen, but i defintely expect to see lots of clinching in this fight.

this is also what i think. a bike and strike wonderboy style would be effective against andrade, muay thai is not designed for evasiveness. im confident it's going to be a pocket exchange shitfest with joana getting the worst of it.

Kiss your money goodbye.

I believe that Alvarez manages to reduce the pace of the fight considerably to undermine Poirier's style and score gradually, winning in the decision. Alvarez should have no problem in takedown Poirier and keeping him on the ground for as long as he needs to. He can work well on leg kicks to undermine Poirier. Dominate the fight in the clinch and leave victorious by points in the decision of the judges. If the two fighters forget to defend themselves and decide to strike madly, I believe that Alvarez wins with a knockout, to better absorb the strikes and to have a better chin than Poirier.

Normally I would back Eddie, too. However, Eddie is coming off that soul destroying McGregor loss.

Who know's what version of Eddie will walk out of that gate.

You gotta consider that post title fight letdown too. We've seen Eddie give his best, he'll probably never get near the title again, I think he kind of won it on a fluke anyway.

Really have no idea who wins this, I think it really just comes down to who performs better on that night, I don't think either guy has a significant advantage in any area.

i took alvarez by dec at +310 he would be smart use his wrestling in this one.

I think I might bet D via KO.

No point betting conservatively on this one, Eddie is just a total gamble coming off that loss.

People acting like Andrade is going to outstrike JJ over 5 rounds are hilarious to me.

I apologize, I am not trying to start arguments. I just don't see the logic there.

It's pretty simple logic. Andrade crowds her, puts her on the back foot, it's easily conceivable she wins the striking Doing so.

At any point call me a daft cunt

I could see pettis catching a choke on old Henry

Fuck it I said it
the price is def tempting, but I dunno man, Pettis catching Henry? I'm like Ray Charles, I just can't see that happening.

Mate I'm fully with you but my guts saying something so I can see a small wager, Henry gets tired round the 3rd shoots in and those long pettis arms grab a guillotine on the way down ?

No ?

FUCK
