Hi, 'leftist poster' from New Zealand here. Buy back hasn't started yet. Those 'only' 700 were so keen that they handed them in to the police before the thing started. Don't get your hopes up for a NRA revolt here. Of course not all will be handed in, but there won't be large scale civil disobedience here. Sadly that isn't the mentality that most of the world has of the government. Most people view the government as a completely separate entity. It's why they don't think twice about funding more bullshit. They are too dumb to realize that this money comes directly from them.

This is even more prevalent in Australia and New Zealand than the US and Canada though. If something is wrong or doesn't work, the first solution is "why doesn't the government do X"

it is just my opinion that modern day gun nuts are holding back human evolution. There is legit mental illness with many of these peoples. There entire persona and life becomes an inanimate object, most have never killed anyone and never will yet shooting at objects gives them the feeling of such power. Such a shame their passion cannot be better applied in the military or pre modern times in a tribal society or with hunting more so. This is something largely only men suffer from. It is so obvious this gun obsession some have is rooted in illness and a means of coping.

and i am not opposed to you owning a semi automatic rifle if you are in fact sane.

I've never met anyone like you describe, and I'm a firearm hobbyist. Sounds like some caricature out of some propaganda piece. That aside, where's the paranoia part you referred to? Everyday we see the world is still full of crime, that governments can be oppressive, and this thread is about a nation coming for folks' guns.

There are "nuts" for sure and insecure people but owning a gun is not about killing someone or something or enjoying shooting it. There are deeper implications and reasons for owning or being emotionally invested in owning one. Men are more invested due to them being the protectors. It's innate in men and any rational person to ensure they and theirs are protected, albeit probably not totally protected by just having guns. Just my quick thought on your post... and i'm a owner of multiple guns, including a semi auto rifle...

For sure, there are people from all walks of life that enjoy shooting guns and enjoy the protection they provide.

I wonder if the USA would take these NZ residents in on asylum claims if their government turned on them and either wanted to jail or hurt them in some other way. I know the argument will be "You cannot seek asylum for wanting to break the law," but that could definitely have many scenarios where it would not be appropriate to apply that logic.
