Dave Meltzer Forced Out Of MMAFighting.Com

I think he got more involved with MMA Fighting when Pro Wrestling was pretty shitty outside of WWE (which is still shitty but still big). With the rise of AEW, AEW-NXT 'War', Smackdown premiering on Thursdays now with a bigger viewing audience, he has more to focus on in an area he has more expertise and passion in. I don't even know how most of these MMA guys even make a living nowadays. MMAFighting was fantastic for years but as soon as Ariel jumped ship to ESPN, it's gone downhill. Their coverage for MayMac was really good, best in class.

Yeah, that shitty law is going to impact every contractor in the state.

So basically if you want to be a freelance journalist, you can't live in California anymore? I think I'd move if I seriously valued my career.

Also, what are Uber, Lyft, etc. going to do? Are they going to cease operations in the state they're headquartered in lmao?

What's the effect on remote programmers? I'm learning to code right now and I wanted to move to California to begin my career at a high paying job in the Bay Area then go remote in a few years. If Californian coders essentially can't be remote contractors anymore then that makes my career plans unfeasible in California. I might have to start my programming career in another state then.

Companies in California pay you the highest wages of any place in world history to do the same jobs. It's not the companies that are fucking you over.

EG -- a programmer makes $100K in Cali for the same job that pays $60K elsewhere in the country that pays $40K in other first world countries that pays $10K in the third world. It's not the company's fault that $100K doesn't buy you anything in Cali.

EG -- A waiter makes minimum wage ($12-$15/ hour depending on where in Cali) + tips. Yes, tipped jobs are still paid the minimum wage by their employer in Cali. So a waiter is clearing $30+ an hour easy, often $40-$60/ hour. The same job makes like $20-$30K full time elsewhere in the US, and like $5K/ year in other parts of the world.

Companies in Cali are paying you ridiculous money.

what they are going to do remains to be seen, but clearly lawmakers are pressing for those companies to hire the workers as permanent (paid + benefits) employees

in my opinion this issue is what led to a bad economy, companies being greedy and sub contracting workers out. Is this going to be the fix, i dont know, companies may try to find other loopholes.

I just don't like how it limits the freedom of people who don't want to do the quiet 9-5 grind in suburbia. I want to be an independent contractor -- I don't want to ever be an employee -- because I value the life freedom it gives me. While you're stuck in an office in the quiet suburbs, I can travel the world while working remote. While you have to suck your bosses dick, I can freely pick and choose projects. While you may have to pull 60 hour weeks during crunch time, I can choose my schedule. While you get 2 weeks vacation a year, I can take months off at a time if I want. Making that lifestyle illegal for me just to provide more security for other people that can't provide it on their own doesn't feel right to me.
I see what you are saying, would be great if a company could do both
this law is targeting how companies are screwing over the majority of people, who then have to go look for 2nd jobs
this becomes difficult because companies are now owned by multiple Venture Capitalists/Shareholders who all want their cut

Melzter got axed cause he has no more value now that he can't trick people into subscribing to his ppv estimates (which were properly disproven by Chael Sonnen btw)

I'm not in favor of anyone losing their job but if this law stops people like you from moving here then I may have to support it
The Bay Area used to be such a great place to live with its own special flavor and culture and wonderfully eclectic and diverse neighborhoods full of generations of history
Now it's been completely destroyed by an invading force of douchebag techie hipster colonizers and their bullshit gentrification
I don't know you and you may be a great person but I truly hope this law ruins your plans
Fuck you and everyone like you
Go somewhere else

when The Bay Area finally falls into the sea it be right day..

Sounds like the issue is with Vox media, not the law. If he's writing 150 articles for them a year, that's 3 a week. That's a lot. That's worth getting paid like an employee.

Not everyone wants to be forced to be an employee. This comes with all sorts of legal BS and commitments you wouldn't otherwise need to make. The government should have no say on the matter if someone chooses to be a freelancer for hire. I did this for years and eventually it led to my own successful business.

Part of that is due to higher minimum wage, as well as we have really high living expenses. This state is horrible for small businesses. We just had to get rid of all of our F-450's, bc they wont let you register them anymore. We own an oil service company, and all CA does is harass my company, and every company I know. Ca is a shit hole

I've a suggestion to keep you all occupied.

This, these laws are typically lobbied by mega-corps because they know smaller companies have a hard as hell time adhering to all of the bullshit that leads to higher costs of business. It's a way to artificially force out future competition. It's part of why so many are leaving CA.

He'll be fine whether he's doing it independently or having his freedom when employed. A lot of fans know he's been solid for a very long time. Does his job well.
