Why do accomplished Runners do so poorly at MMA cardio?

It's all about the S.A.I.D (specific adaptation to imposed demands) principle. The physiology of a high level runners has adapted to running, not fighting. Take Diaz, Usman, Colby and all of the best gas tanks in MMA and they won't be able to keep up with Mo Farah on a 10 mile run, at all. That doesn't mean they are out of shape, it just means they haven't physiologically adapted to the specific movement of running like Mo Farah has.

ABSOLUTELY!!

muscle groups have fast and slow twitch fibers and the body makes physiological adaptations that are very activity specific

grappling is a VERY different activity than running and is clearly far more demanding however a world class grappler could NEVER compete at the elite levels of distance running just as a world class runner would get smoked on the mat

combat sports have a phenomenal learning curve as well where as running is a very natural activity that doesn't require years of practice to achieve proficiency

whenever a combat athlete is out on the road "running for cardio" they are giving away valuable mat time where they could be learning new skills at the same time as building excellent sport specific cardio

running for cardio will convert your fast to slow twitch fibers, lower your testosterone and has a high chance of injury plus it is an activity 100% devoid of martial arts skills

well...I use my decades of personal 1st hand experience in combat sports and general athletics to develop training strategies for my athletes

at 16 I was severely injured in an accident breaking femur and tearing a muscle in my calf

these injuries made it very painful for me to run yet i could cycle, swim or grapple for days

playing football and wrestling in school I was FORCED to run and the severe pain made me angry so i looked at the situation with a very different mindset

I have been employed as a professional athletic coach and science professional thru my career and I applied the basic scientific method to my training regimes

I was also raised in multiple countries...Brazil, South Africa, Hawaii, the middle east so i have a much much wider exposure to varied attitudes than the average athlete

when I took over my old highschool wrestling team I IMMEDIATELY banned "running for cardio" as I was aware from all my years of personal 1st hand combat sports experience that steady state cardio is a poor form of training for combat sports and running is a poor form of steady state cardio

I IMMEDIATELY saw a massive improvement in my highschool athletes and broke all the schools 30 years + of historical records

I was recognized as being hyper successful by all the coaches in the district as they were used to Atherton as a commonly LAST PLACE TEAM often just barely beating out the school for the blind yet after I took over the program Atherton immediately shot up the ranks and was commonly finishing in the middle of the pack

all of a sudden this "laughing stock" team was hitting Japanese wizzers, freestyle throws and Judo trips and most impressively NOT GASSING

you see these athletes now WRESTLED for cardio just like Wilder and Mayweather BOXED for cardio

believe me...i caught A LOT of pushback when i cut all running from my wrestling team

I developed a saying...."if you have time or energy to go jogging"....
"YOU HAVEN'T WRESTLED ENOUGH TODAY"
I checked the records on the Kentucky Westling High School website, that school Atherton finished close to, or in last place at State every year I looked at which was 98-2007. I think one year they scored 3, and 5, but usually just 0.

Did I see that right? Or am I in the wrong state. You bring up this record setting coach line often, I think it’s worth proving.

Spoken like a TRUE theorist.

I run 11 miles every day except Sunday, and I weigh 200 lbs and can do 20 pullups. What time of muscle fiber do I have?

I might not be "world class" in a foot race, but it tickles my asshole to see people who dont know what the fuck they are talking about spill this weak shit out their ass. You probably drink beer and shit and talk like that. I KNOW you are not trying hard to improve or you wouldnt have time for that JRE broscience bullshit.

Your right...Atherton usually came in LAST or near last place in district AND state

It was a LAUGHING stock program often just barely beating the school for the blind

...until i took over...

during my tenure Atherton always finished in the middle of the pack in districts and scored in state

I set the schools historical record in 2002

I was the highest scoring head coach in Atherton wrestling High School history because I taught freestyle, Greco-Roman and Judo techniques and MOST IMPORTANTLY eliminated "running for cardio" replacing it with WRESTLING for cardio

Dude I never heard of that book or that aurthor before you started posting about it. I don't read any books about MMA and the last book I read about fitness was Arnold's book years ago.

Imagine thinking your kid was at wrestling practice and instead he was hanging out with this insane motherfucker. Yikes.

actually participate in combat sports and you might learn something

I bet i could train a highschool kid to choke you out

Floyds runs 8-15 miles (or maybe more) a day. @-guerilla-

O yeah?

Doesnt sound like it

It sounds like Floyd and Deontay Wilder are smart enough to BOX for cardio not run for cardio and breaking with this long-held tradition would mean a slap in the face for all those old school trainers the boxing community deifys so I would expect a fair amount of chicanery

Did you know that Pro Combat athletes don't always tell the truth about their training regimen?

go for a long jog...you will feel better because it lowers your testosterone and has a calming and soothing effect on the body

great for a sore rear [i hear]

"When is someone going to reply to me?"-guerilla the mouth breather who hates jogging

LOL

actually... I'm laid back at work passing the slow time of the year using voice text on my phone to CRUSH you fools

Only @monkeyrhythm gave me any kind of struggle on this thread and i have to respect his effort

You did well @Robocok but monkey kept on task a bit better

He gets a B
You get a C

Overall you both passed but I think you both can do a little bit better next time if you apply yourselfs

# bought the book

* just in case you didn't buy the book I can save you fifty bucks

"Roadwork 2.0"=NOT running for cardio

I like hill sprints, but they take me forever to recover from. The best conditioning carryover I ever got was from doing burpees.

Genius...any polymeric grappling related movements are by far the best option for partnerless MMA training if you lack good striking bags

I get waist deep in the ocean and high knee sprint/penetration step and often do the sit out/hip heist/sprawl drill in water a bit more shallow when I go body boarding (if the waves flatten)

Otherwise body boarding is AQESOME blast cardio and involves a lots of breath hold training (invaluable for MMA)

Although you should NEVER hold your breath when exerting yourself it will happen from time to time

Fight position polymetrics are invaluable for wharm ups...

I developed a 5 min warm up for my wrestlers that was EXTREMELY SIMPLE and allowed 1hr 55min of WRESTLING for CARDIO!
