Eh, I do t know about 10. Fedor wasn’t all that active from 2006 on. I think if he had come over in ‘07 after PRIDE, he would’ve been champ and reigned for a couple of years. But from ‘08 on he was starting to decline, so I doubt he’d have defended 10 times. He’d have defended a 4-5 times *maybe*.

He won the World HW title in 2003 and entered the Heavyweight Grand Prix in 2004. Three of those tournament fights could have counted as additional title defenses but that's okay, he won the whole tournament and became Champ Champ

Oh I was only looking at this from the perspective of Fedor coming to the UFC after PRIDE. If he’s been in the UFC the whole time, it’s a no-brainer. He’d easily have 10+ defenses, and 15 defenses wouldn’t be out of the realm of possibility.

That’s just because PRIDE was goofy and didn’t designate every fight a title defense. Fedor had something like 18 consecutive wins from the time he won the title until Werdum defeated him.

It's almost like defences... are defences. Not random fights against whoever. It's one immensely qualified fighter attempting to beat you after the other until you fail to beat one. By your logic Jon would be at 14 defences. And he certainly has the far greater argument to go with that standard as his 14 fights have all actually been title fights, just sometimes he was winning the belt.

Not withstanding the fact that not every fight Fedor fought after winning the belt remotely even deserved to be a title fight (as opposed to presenting it as 18 wins over the best), Pride didn't like designating title fights for their champs because they didn't want them losing their belt. They'd rather they lose but can still be promoted as champ for another fight. Which proved well thought out as that's the same fuckery WAMMA pulled after Werdum tapped Fedor in 60 seconds. The fight had been promoted as a defence for Fedor and then when Fedor lost the belt wasn't given to Werdum, and just magically disappeared.

Why/how would Jones be at 14 defenses by my logic?
I also said nothing about “18 wins over the best.” What I am saying is that it’s pointless and silly to try and knock Fedor with a comment like “he didn’t even have 6 defenses”. It makes it sound like he couldn’t manage that, or lost fights, when neither is true. So the guy won 18 fights and had 5 defenses— what’s the record for a UFC heavyweight?

For the point of this thread, if Fedor had been in the UFC the whole time, every fight would’ve been a title fight. Who beats him between 2002 and at least 2008? By the time we get to ‘08 or ‘09 maybe Brock or Carwin. Maybe. Let’s say he fights 3 times in ‘03, ‘04, and ‘05, then twice thereafter. He could very realistically have had 10 defenses. It’s not a crazy claim to make.
