Can't think of a top caliber fighter like Tony with such a crappy stand up

K1-Maia has fought for the title twice and has a great resume. His list of wins is better than Tony's and Khabib's as well.

What a horrible take.

How can he beat Barboza, Cowboy, and hmmmmmmm everyone other than MJ(his arm was broke) on the feet??

Tony isn’t good defensively, but his offensive isn’t bad ....his opponent aren’t hitting themselves, so something is changing their face

Is this game we're going to play lol: "Take away his (insert whatever)"

Take away Khabib's legs and...

Take away Vitor's hands...

Take away Cro Cop's kicks...

Take away Couture's wrestling...

Take away Ngannou's hands...

Such a dumb game to play. And BTW, no one in this thread or anywhere has ever insinuated Tony doesn't have holes in his stand up. People are just defending comments like "his stand up is crappy".

Boxing, wrestling etc are fighting skills. Cardio has nothing to do with fighing or technic. It's being athletic.

The point of my thread was pointing out ferguson's strikings flaws

Cardio, advancing, fear of going to the ground

Well - he has won 12 in a row and widely considered the #2 lightweight in world ( I don't know if hes #2 but hes certainly top 5) so I'd definitely would say hea somewhat well rounded. He might be a little wreckless while standing but thats one of the reasons he's developed a following ......and he wins.

We'll see what happens vs khabib, the result and what follows ( especially if he loses).

He's 36 years old and hasn't lost in 8 years...

It won’t last much longer for him. His relative inactivity in recent years has saved him. He’s not special. I have been watching MMA for 20 years. Before that, boxing. I have seen a million guys who rely on being able to walk through punches as a major part of their arsenal. They all get their chins cracked and are never the same after.

Wtf is he fighting Ali the manager??

Somewhat ugly but not crappy, very effective

Hes 1B. Theres no definitive number until him and Khabib fight or 1 of them loses

Of course i'm talking about modern era. We are far from days where a jiu jitsu guy could become champion with no good striking skillset.

What is unsual with a guy like Tony is despite all the progress that has been made in the professionalism in MMA, the guy does not seem to care about implementing basic striking fundamentals.

Don't get me wrong, the kid is great. He is unpredictable and relentless with his offense. But let's be real, from a technical point of view, he's not a good striker.
He fights with his chin up, hands down, gets countered easily, and has been knocked down quite a few times.

What makes him stand out is definitely his unbelievable cardio, his crafty ground game and his ability to transition well from standing to ground position.

What astonishes me is that he hasn't been ko'd before. I guess if you add to his cardio his iron chin, there's nothing his opponent can really do.

A bad match up would be a prime bendo, edgar, or khabib obviously. A good wrestler that can follow his pace and control him on the ground without being overwhelmed with his advancing.
Because i don't know if ANY of the fighters in ufc match his cardio..

I guess what i want to say is that it's so uncommon to find such a top fighter not being well rounded
His style is effective. But he isn’t hitting a punching bag. There are plenty of fighters that look like they have great technique but in the fight their technique doesn’t hold up. Mcgregor vs Diaz is a great example, Diaz with his slappy swinging was able to out do Mcgregors prettier punches. Then there are Eric “el terrible” morales and Pac-Man with their weird styles that beat the shit out of plenty of badass boxers and their pretty technique.

Imagine Cucuy with headbutts and stomps/Soccer kicks! The guy seems to sharpen his elbows, knuckles and knees before everyfight. Uses his whole body as a weapon. My favorite current fighter

Lol what a silly thread. Guys with a crappy stand up don't do this to their opponents. Just because it's unorthodox doesn't mean it's crappy.

Seriously. Tony turns his opponents into masks of blood. It's not traditional striking and it's not "crisp" but it's effective so who cares? I'd say it's better to have effective striking than "crisp" or "technical" striking like, say, Cerrone has. We saw how that went.

Well defense is a part of striking, and Khabib's is way better than Tony's
And his offensive is garbage. If he didn't have some of the best grappling ever, his awful striking would have been exposed a long time ago.

Well , we'll see. Las Vegas has khabib as a 3-1 favorite ( which doesn't mean Tony is going to lose) but it does make khabib clear champ and Tony behind ....* for the time being. If Tony should lose- AS FAR AS FIGHT/STYLES GO- , I'd pay asking price for the filled out todays " do bronx " vs. Tony Ferguson ( again, if Tony should lose).
