The highest paid guy in a group of underpaid people is still underpaid. The UFC simply gives less of its profit to its athletes than any of the major organizations. If the company you're working wants you to do extra work (for instance, a superfight) but doesn't want to pay you extra for it, do you do it, or do you hold out for a bigger slice of the pie?

And everything about prize fighting is about money. The saying "follow the money" applies to MMA and every other professional sport. If they just wanted to fight and didn't care about money, they could go to a bar parking lot and fight. There's a reason they don't do that.

Khabib vs GSP would be the grappling equivalent to Adesanya vs Anderson.

The old guy will do better than expected but ultimately lose to the younger guy in his prime.
 
I don't believe that to the full extent. GSP has continuously said he's been for this fight. Dana has been against this fight for whatever reason for a long time now.

Underpaid is in terms of percentage of the revenue generated by the fight. If the fighters pull in $5 million dollars of PPV for the UFC, then getting paid a million each is good. If the fighters pull in $100 million for the UFC, then getting paid a million each is bad.

In practice, under capitalism how much is a fair payment ultimately is determined by the market. If promoters and fighters all agree, then the payment is by definition fair and the fight happens. If they don't agree then at least one of the three (and in the case of MMA I suspect often two - the fighters) thinks its unfair, and the fight doesn't happen.

And of course a lot of negotiation goes on between promoters and fighters, and in the case of super fights between dominant champs these negotiations are about tens of millions of dollars, which means the negotiations can last a long time. A normal part of negotiations in any industry is one or more sides holding out for better, and that can go on for several years in most industries -- no competent business man rushes into a bad deal when big money is involved, something that both the promoters and the fighters' managers will know very well. That's why it took years for the Pac-Mayweather fight to happen. In the case of something like GSP-Anderson the problem is that the fighters age, and holding out too long (and the UFC, GSP, and Anderson were all holding out for their conditions -- the UFC wanted to keep their normal profit margin, GSP wanted it at 170, Anderson at 185, and almost certainly both GSP and Anderson wanted extra money to change weight) instead of compromising means the fight can become irrelevant.

you also know there are hundards of boxer who make nothing as well. if you the fighters that floyd mayweather promotes makes anything close to 100 million. i bet there many that dont make 100k.

I'm in the minority, but I wouldn't be shocked if GSP was still great. The age thing gets played out, we've seen a ton of world champions in combat sports, not just MMA, be anywhere from their mid 30s to early 40s. GSP won the MW belt at 36 years old and he isn't even 40 yet. I'm not saying he's in his prime, but I wouldn't be shocked if he's still really, really good and a threat to Khabib. But ultimately, if GSP doesn't want the fight, that's all that matters at this stage. But the fight itself would interest me greatly.

That’s simply not true probably. GSP probably said hey guy don’t be a bitch and make an old man cut to 155. How about YOU compromise as well and meet in the middle? Challenging for both of us? Especially since you’re the one who cried for this fight for so long? But narcissists can only see things from their perspective. In Khabibs dagestani mind that means GSP is not interested. Khabib and Conor are similar in many ways tbh. And I say that as someone who likes Khabib and dislikes Conor. GSPs the only one with enough balls to be ready to sacrifice in the situation.

Notice how Khabib never once agreed to catch weight? Always said 155 or nothing. Such a narcissistic move. All about me me me. Me get what I want handed me no compromise. Okay then stfu about calling him out. Me only fight at a weight I don’t even have the discipline of making half the time.

It’s a travesty GSP is a nice fella and isn’t blasting Khabib for ducking a catch weight fight.
