Mexican Gloves - Review

New Sporting
(This is going to be my honest opinion from what I experienced, others may not have had the same. probably one of my lengthier reviews)
View attachment 881748

I purchased these gloves directly from New sporting just before @Edgar Martinez started - "The Boxing Collector" website and I advise anybody who wants a pair after reading this review to get a pair via @Edgar Martinez. From my knowledge they are not doing custom orders anymore for individual sales and are focusing more on bulk/wholesale sales. There was a post a while back on the NS Instagram saying any custom orders placed wont be ready until after around a 6 months wait due to a huge order (could of changed).

Bit of a recap for those who have never heard of New Sporting, they first started producing gloves a few years back and where brilliant with some amazing reviews and feedback but once the name grew the quality and customer service rapidly started to decline many people started to avoid them and many issues arose. If you give them a search on Sherdog and YouTube you'll see the numerous negative threads and videos plus some controversies. Move forward to 2020/2021 and New Sporting reinvented themselves and wanted to prove they have done so and again there positive reviews and experiences started to come flooding in and this is where I thought I'd take a punt and purchase a pair - like stated above other peoples experience may not be the same.

So the review. These gloves/brand bring me so much confusion, anger and disappointment then anything I've ever owned <Lmaoo>
Initially after contacting NS the customer services was top notch, speedy replies and even the manufacturing of the gloves was fast. In my hands within a week, wow! Was not expecting that. Pictures and video updates of the process and completed gloves - they really had turned over a new leaf...so I thought.

First impressions, these gloves are amazing. The smell of leather was strong, they look fantastic and craftmanship is amazing the stitching is neat and the threads thick. the leather is also thick, I'm no tanner but it looks like really high quality leather and the welted seams are done really well but....there is a cut right down the middle of the leather on the punch surface on the right glove, not good. Oh wait there is another on the left glove near the fingers. why didn't I pick this up on the pictures and videos they sent. I look back at the pictures to notice they didn't even show me the back of the right glove - Mexican gloves various brands | Page 17 | Sherdog Forums | UFC, MMA & Boxing Discussion see my post to better understand. I contacted them and they did offer some decent discount but I'm still waiting for a reply ha there was some speculation about the use of leather off cuts when making the gloves but who knows how true that is, so there is the disappointment and anger.

Now the fit and feel, they feel amazing on! Not too tight, not too loose like the Campeons/Casanovas, the NS really sit nice on the hands considering the profile is fairly large similar in size to the Casanovas, its exactly what I want in a glove. The thumb doesn't feel too bad and the lining for Mexican gloves is fairly soft and one thing that also differentiates them from other Mexican gloves is the padding, its feels soft and supple these are Mexican gloves that actually good to spar in, they wont feel like your hitting your partner with a brick (not that you'd care anyway) and I know I said in the Casanova post I wont mention wrist support but this is really really good on these gloves

Now you can see my frustration - An amazing glove using good high quality materials put together amazingly well but let down by poor QC, shady business and no care for the brands reputation and this absolutely kills me deep down because these could be an amazing glove/brand up there with the best. Potentially my favourite glove out of the lot if it wasn't for the defects and New Sporting in general.....im not sure how they are now but hopefully they are still improving.

Are the New Sporting usable for sparring or will training partners call you an asshole for hitting them with bricks?

I got these from Mexico in 1999. They still pack a punch!

Boxeo
20211208_121954.jpg
It's been a while since my last review but it's finally here and as promised some boxeo ha. I purchased these off @Edgar Martinez last month after getting a little bit excited with the colour, for some reason I was really into the blue, yellow and white with the split thumb..it matches my Bosnia and Herzegovina flag I don't have.
I'd seen the Boxeo name thrown around a lot on the forum and spoken very highly of by a lot of the Mexican members of the forum. If I'm correct boxeo is a work horse of a glove hence why it's fairly popular in Mexican gyms (rumour has is Campeon & Boxeo are the most popular, I could be wrong)

First impression of these, I've just bought some more GIl gloves <Eek2.0>. They are very very similar to Gil but there are a few nice differences which puts the boxeo just above the Gil in my personal opinion and experience (unless I have some bad Gil gloves). These Boxeo came without the welted seams which isn't a deal breaker even though I'm into the welted seams. They are made with goat leather and there are some imperfections which can be seen in the pictures (didn't take too many but there are more defects than I've shown), I'm unsure if this is a common occurance with goat leather, maybe if they’ve got the leather from some savage war goats but this is something maybe Boxeo could improve on in regards to cuts of leather. I do understand goat leather is tougher than standard cowhide so that's a bonus. The size is identical to the Gil gloves and have that flat Mexican punch surface and box looking profile. Very sleek, slender looking glove and quite a small profile once on...I like it. Double stitching which is relatively thick, not the best probably the same level as Campeons if not a tad better. The cuff is a little different to the others instead of the standard triple cuff where all sections are the same size, the middle section is larger than the top and bottom sections (hard to explain, easier to see on the pictures) and the foam padding doesn't run to the bottom of the wrist, this can be seen on pictures of the inside of glove where the foam ends a few centimetres short. Finally the finish on the coloured leather is really good unlike the Gil but there was quite a few areas of excess glue/adhesive which I managed to get off.

Fit and feel, again very similar to the Gil. I was expecting these to have huge pockets like the Casanova as they have the same box looking shape/profile but they fit exceptionally well, just like the Gil gloves and I'm really into the fit of the Gil the only thing that let the Gil down was the slippery wrists ha. These Boxeo don't have that problem and the wrist fitting and support is amazing hence why if I was to pick between the Gil and Boxeo I'd probably choose the Boxeo. They feel lovely on and the lining inside doesn't feel rough at all which you kind of expect, the thumb placement is good so no problems there.

Final thoughts, I really like these and although I do like all my Mexican gloves, i think I need to be more critical but I understand and appreciate they are handmade so there are going to be flaws, many of the flaws are mainly cosmetic - apart from NS, up yours NS haha. Where Boxeo could improve on is the quality of the goat leather just to get rid of those imperfections and also the stitching. In regards to sparring in them I'd probably avoid it unless your sparring partner is a double hard bastard. These the same as most Mexican gloves are made with cement (latex foam) are stiff and tough and will take some breaking in.
I'd rate these gloves higher than my Gil, Campeons and NS (just due to my experience and the defect. they'd be rated a lot higher as stated in my NS review) so these sit firmly in the middle just under my Casanovas.

Hey @Kendodsworth
Thanks for the Boxeo review, very interesting to read.

I sort of agree with you, Boxeo unfortunately may be the workshop with one of the most aesthetic imperfections, mainly in stitching. Which I personally doesn't really mind, as long as the gloves works well - which they have done for me.

Regarding the padding, I don't feel these as stiff as Gil, Lopez or other MX. I've used mines to Sparring several times and I feel the padding isn't as stiff as Cleto or others. Not stiff, kind of "bouncy" feeling when punching my opponents.

And yes, the fitting is one of the things I love about Boxeo above Campeon, Casanova and others.

Great looking gloves, thanks for the review.

I have to say, I find it strange that the pocket isn't as big as Casanovas given how large the hand compartment looks from the outside (i.e. in relation to the wrist area). Is it simply packed with thicker foam in the hand compartment? Or does it just have a much more tapered wrist?

Damn, my man!
I am myself looking to start my own little "Mexican Boxing Glove Collection" & I enjoyed every single second of Reading this Post! Good Work!
Unfortunately its quite hard to get authentic gloves in Germany - so it will Take a while for me!

Btw. Happy new year to you all!

I totally forgot to reply to this I'm really sorry!!!
I think its a mixture of both if I'm honest. The padding seems a little thicker than the casanovas/gil but has a similar taper to my classic mexicombate. They do fit really nice a pretty good middle ground in regards to fit.

Not a problem my man, I really enjoyed it weirdly. The missus thought I was a little weird with loads of gloves laid out but needs must haha.

It's pretty much the same here in the UK, it's really difficult to get good authentic Mexican made gloves outside of reyes. @Edgar Martinez is definitely the man to help you out!

No worries, thanks for clarifying. I need a new pair of sparring gloves and I keep going back and forth between all the Mexican gloves.

Here are my own collection of Mexican brands. All are 14 OZ on the tag and as all of you expect, all are overweighted I will try to post my thoughts about every pair in the following days.

Look at those beauties!!!

I've Always been a plain black or White glove-guy, but damn... Ever since i've started joining this Forum I want my Future gloves AS flashy and colorful as possible lol

I start with my oldest pair. New Sporting 14 OZ gloves. I ordered them after the hype started in 2018. And I need to wait for my pair for ages. Five months actually, till February 2019. There are also some misunderstaning. I've sent them picture of the Grant fight gloves and said that want this colorway in their 2b model. But they made it as the bigger fight glove with flat cuff and different than their ussual padding at the palm.

Things I like:
1. Thumb placement. It is the most comfortable from all the gloves I own. Goes nice and parallel to the fist.
2. Size and padding. They not to big, not too tight. Doesn't have any pinch points. Padding is softer and more on the protective side. 14 OZ on the tag but wieght around 16 OZ.

things I don't like:
1. Lining. It is smooth in touch but reaps very easily. Gloves came with reaped linning from the workshop on both gloves where the thumb meets fist with exposed foam. During the use linning reaped off in both gloves in the finger pocket and now is loose inside.
2. Padding inside gloves is covered with some foil probably becuse they make that squeaky sound.

Beside that. Stitching is good, no loose threads. Leather is thick, have already some wrinkles on it but don't brake, only the piping is broken in few places now.

Next pair I bought around mid 2019 was Deportes Casanova in 14 OZ. I don't remember how I found them, probably in Facebook but I wanted to try some gloves used by Rocky and Appolo :D
It was my first order in Spanish language but I received exactly what I wanted, so not so bad. Although I didn't know what are standard Mexican gloves look alike. Now I know if I want something higher quality from Casanova ( I can't say mine are bad) I need to ask for 'Retro' type with triple cuff, double stitching, welted seams and attached thumb.
Mine are like basic version with single stitching, unattached thumb and no welted seams. But they were super cheap like 900 MXN.

Things I like:
1. Best wrist support from the gloves I own. They have nice thick padding on the palm side. I think it is cotton inside not any foam.
2. Broken in feel from the beginning. I can easily open my hands. It is connected with the unattached thumb, yet it is still impossible to poke somebody in the eye due to the thumb placement
3. I can form a really tight fist in them.

Things I don't like
1. Only issue I have with the is the very wide hand pocket. I have something like an inch of free space on the outer side of my hand. I need also to put gel knuckles guards just to fill the empty space between my fist and the inside of the glove. (but I heard that they improved the design and now gloves are not so wide)

Overall a very good glove, very durable. Some might say the lining is rough but I don't feel it with hand wraps on. At least it is very tight and durable as well. I don't have any exposed latex inside and it doesn't tear anywhere. The padding is not very thick but does its job with protection of the hands.

I love the colour and pattern on these!!!! I really rate casanovas even with the huge hand pockets. I think they'll be even better now that has apprently been sorted. Great gloves! Great reviews!!!

I've been staring at those blue and yellow Boxeo at Edgar's shop like every single day now. I'm probably going to purchase it this February, depending on if I owe the government any addition money for taxes. This thread is awesome! Thank you all for posting your reviews and experinces
