Tried to find firearm / pistol thread - Just got myself a Glock 17

You should have got a 1911. It’s like a Glock, but for men.

Okay fudd.

Nothing wrong with modern 9mm. "Knock down power" is an 80s/90s thing. Modern 9mm ammo is much evolved from the era of those arguments. Plus, 15-20 rounds in a full size vs 8-14 for .45. Glocks are great guns, just a matter of preference when it comes to the bigger reputable manufacturers (Glock, Sig, FN, HK, CZ, s&w, etc).

I tried to find a thread already but the search function here is a bit wonky.

In 10 days I can pick up my Glock 17. Horrible thing about California is the 10 shot capacity :( . I held a large number of pistols. Debated between 9mm, 10mm, .40 and .45 but ultimately wanted something affordable and fun to shoot but also good in case of SHTF.

I didn't realize there was a Glock 45 out there which is the hybrid between the 17 and the 19. The 19 was too small in my hands and felt front heavy b/c of the shorter grip.

It will be my first pistol after owning a number of shotguns and .22lr rilfes.

I know Glock gets a bad rap sometimes b/c of rap songs always singing about them and what not. But just holding it, feeling it, seeing how easy it is to use it won. Beretta was 1B for me...super close.

I know 9mm won't "knock a man down" or anything but I also have buckshot 12ga if it comes to that scenario.

Yeah mag restrictions are fucking dumb.. but then again most restrictions on a constitutional right are dumb.. anyway nice purchase. You just can’t go wrong with a Glock when it comes to things like defense, they’re well designed, and very reliable. Only thing people tend to have issue with is the trigger safety -but they’re rock solid as long as you have great trigger discipline

TS is in Cali so the mag capacity argument falls flat against a 1911

You should attack the fact that 1911’s are notoriously finicky (stove pipes, round stacking, general ftf issues) and unless high end can be inaccurate too.. (I love 1911’s fwiw lol)

Good choice. I'm not a glock guy myself but there is no doubt they are solid reliable guns.

If you “need” a 15 round mag, you need shooting lessons, not a bigger mag….

I have a few rifles, and I inherited my Dads military issue .45. But all for home defense. Thanks to a shit liberal Mayor shit has gone off really bad the last few years in the city. It reminds me of the 80s when I was younger but worse because Cops are not allowed to really handle things properly anymore. No repercussions, no bail etc. Now I have a few variations of this for protection:

Completely illegal in my state to own those things. You are better off having a knife or a gun in my state.

I was on the fence with no safety issue too. But for me, in a stressful situation, I preferred to go without the extra safety. I want to store it with full mag, nothing in the chamber. When I need it to go I want to rack it and be ready. Not get hung up on safety or the hammer or anything like that.
Of course all that can be trained through repetition. Like I have a Mossberg 500 with the safety on top been have been shooting Mossberg for 30 years so it's second nature to me. Haven't shot pistols regularly at all.

Mine is a grey area as it has functions. Key chain, and has a nub off the end to touch buttons. It is marketed as anti germ safety lol.

Ahhhh.....I like it :) - The law might not like it if you used it to commit a crime but if you get to the point where you need it for protection then who cares about the legality at that point. You are fearing for your life.

Watch some dash or body cam videos. Watch some defense shootings. Criminals are cowards, rarely shoot solo. You ain't shooting at the range statically. Average is 3-4 rounds in a self defense shooting. I like to be above average, maybe your fudd gun is enough for you.

My point exactly. By the time help arrives, that thing can be disposed of as well. My primary focus is to strike and retreat....get out to safety. Recently there have been "sucker punchers"....Young strong dudes throwing Haymakers at normal people just because. Gotta keep your head on a swivel.

Actually you did fine.

It's a half plastic gun like all the half plastic guns.

Just a matter of practice now.

I like glocks a lot. The first time i shot, i taste tested a bunch of pistols and like the glock the best. I own several now and still like their feel better than others like shield and hellcat.

Having owned multiple glocks and one 1911 you run the risk of being a sissy and limp wristing the .45 leading to jams.
I of course didn't have that issue, but I did once have my firing pin roll off my desk during cleaning and fall between the cracks in the floorboards of one house into the nether between floor and garage.... and that felt just as bad as limp wristing it.
