Official Women's Division Discussion #27

"A twitter user thought it was a good idea to tag O’Neill and share his low opinion of her.

“[O’neill] is genuinely such a low level of fighter,” wrote the user who I am choosing to leave anonymous. “Women’s mma in general is low level but Casey is something else. I have no fighting experience at all but could still fight better than she does.”

It didn’t take long for O’Neill to seize on those words and offer a challenge.

“[Xtreme Couture] in Las Vegas. Tuesday/Thursday is sparring day. 3:30pm,” she wrote.

She followed that tweet up with, “Come spar me, that would be fun.”

Fun for her, I’m sure.

O’Neill’s coach waded into the conversation, attempting to make sure his gym wouldn’t be held liable for what might happen if a random dude on the internet sparred a UFC fighter.

“Just sign the waiver,” wrote Eric Nicksick."

it's time casey o'neill fought some actual competition, not some internet troll or whatever softballs she keeps getting from the ufc
I don't think too high of her skills either BUT I do love and respect her calling this out and offering sparring.

To your other post it will be interesting to see what Ladd does next I was almost sure Hansen would retire since she looked very disinterested in mma but then she resigned with Invicta.

Very good performance for Chelsea. Stoliarenko had to get the fight to the ground but every time she got a takedown it ended up turning from bad to worse. In this fight Chelsea's poor takedown defense was her key to winning. This has to the the first fight where multiple takedown attempts ends up with the person who gets the takedown being full mounted.

that's a fair point. no harm in taking a step back in order to figure out where one's head is at, that's worked out for plenty of other UFC fighters (Angie of course, with Julian Erosa and Damon Jackson being other favourite examples)

Yan Xionan looked huge tonight, I don't remember her being so ripped. Throw her to Andrade next please.

I hope Chandler stays at Featherweight, she looked huge too and has some real pop in her strikes. Stoliarenko is more than likely getting the chop. Ladd vs Stoliarenko is currently in the works for the year end PFL card /s.

So Roxanne and Antonina are softballs?

Also can someone explain why Casey's other good win Procopio was cut, lost a split to Rosa at 135, beat Meatball and then cut after losing to O'Neill? Maybe she wasn't pretty enough.

yes - believe it or not, it is possible to like a fighter while simultaneously being realistic about their skill level in any given field of competition. a shocking fact, i know

She was 5-0 and a pro for less than two years when she signed to the UFC. Few fights later she’s fighting the 12th ranked flyweight in the world. I’d hardly call that being thrown softballs.

Dern vs. Yan was fun stuff - would have been ok with 10-8 5th round, but also more than okay with how things went now. People talk about Dern lacking in the TD department, but Yan getting (easily) the record on ground time with Dern and not getting submitted is what we should really take out of this, right?

Bummed about Stoliarenko probably getting her walking papers. It is what it is, but as I tend to always say, whenever she gets mentioned here:

Fan for life. <{JustBleed}>

I guess I am in the minority who did not really like the fight. Largely because of how sloppy Dern is at everything until it hits the ground how much worse it looked as she started to get tired. Flailing around with her arms like she was being attacked by a swarm of bees is not exactly decent technique.

Impressed with Yan's defense on the ground, though.

One of the things that I find so surprising about Dern is how terrible her takedowns are giving who her father is. Megaton has incredibly explosive takedowns hence the nickname. No idea why the huge discrepancy between the two. Sure, Dern will never have his strength but she also seems to lack in both set-up and technique.

Lessons from last night: athleticism matters in MMA. Julija got overpowered and Hulk smashed. After the first takedown where she got Chelsea by surprise, she just got smashed everywhere. Couldn't hang on the feet, got lit up, then had all her TD attempts stuffed & reversed for more beatings on the ground.

Same thing in the Dern fight, if she were about 130lbs and jacked like most of the top fighters in her division, she wouldn't have as much trouble taking opponents down even with her shitty technique. Yan oon the other hand looks to be about 130lbs and jacked so she did manage to stuff a lot of takedown attempts even though her technique wasn't that great. Helped on the ground too where she was able to muscle out of some positions and stall out in others to run out the clock and survive.

This was my prediction for the fight

I don't think I was too far off. Yan's takedown defence was improved, mostly because she stayed patient and kept her composure instead of being a spaz and rushing everything like she did against Esparza. Yan staying composed and not doing dumb shit all over the place was what impressed me the most, she got put in bad positions by Dern and most fighters would've panicked and done something dumb to give up a sub. But she still almost threw the fight a couple times by hanging around with Dern on the ground when she had a clear exit to stand back up.

Dern on the other hand potatoed it pretty good. She was way too happy striking and didn't go after takedowns aggressively enough. She didn't look to pressure Yan backwards on a consistent basis to setup takedown openings, and when she got those opportunities she didn't know how to finish them. All those times when she had a solid hold of Yan's leg should've been easy takedowns, don't stand there pushing her into the fence, turn the corner to get an angle and sit her down or pull her off the fence and sweep the leg.

Overall, an ok fight that I probably won't be watching again for a while. Yan's striking is nothing special and fun as Dern is on the ground the rest of her game is kinda painful to watch.

I don't know if I'd call it softballs, but it's definitely favourable matchmaking. Looking at the rankings in fall 2021 to spring of this year, almost all the fighters who are in the 10-15 slots or just outside the rankings are harder matchups for Casey than Roxy and Antonina. Fiorot, Grasso, Barber, Maverick, and Andrea Lee (if she's not derping) are all harder matchups for her and half of them would likely beat the snot out of her.

Matchmakers could easily have given her Fiorot & Grasso and she'd be looking at a .500 record in the UFC.

Too busy giving Manon softballs as well
