I remember watching a Cary Kolat interview where he talked about champion wrestlers from Russia earning a crap wage by American standards that was good for the average Russian.

Maybe these guys can earn quite a bit more from sponsorship these days. In the UK winning an Olympic gold medal is very hit and miss financially.

Of more interest to me is he's been interviewed about this clip and his training w/ Olympic medalists like Kadimagomedov and he's on record as stating he does well and often wins on the feet to get it to the mat or get position. But once it hits the mat that's when the Olympic medalists often begin their period of dominance/winning in the exchange.

Based on this type of grappling success against Olympic medalists I'm not sure why anyone would be surprised he thinks he could hang with anyone near his weight class.

It might be effusive confidence that isn't justified objectively but subjectively they truly do believe what they say whether you can fathom that or not.

Anyways, this doesn't have anything to do with his MMA wrestling. Islam's MMA wrestling has been on display for everyone to see and it speaks for itself.

I don’t mind that he used PEDs, but all the dishonesty around it bothers me. Again he got the priviledge, while other athletes were disqualified. Hell, he was not even supposed to be allowed to fight in UFC ever, and then suddenly got fast tracked to the title shot and got it on his terms and scedule, in his home turf. Now we have a champ with PED history, who disrespects other athletes and talks shit.

1. You can choose to not believe he's humble or true .. that doesn't negate he is.

2. There's no way to prove dishonesty from your place at home, unless you work for USADA and know something we don't. Again, having it for a medical procedure recovery and saying it was widely used are not mutually exclusive.

3. He was acquitted by USADA. I'm sure they have their ways in confirming if he was lying. Mind you he wasn't a superstar or anything at the time, so getting rid of him was super easy.

4. He became a champ beating one of the LW GOATs in his prime, while not on PEDs. Kinda invalidates the whole PEDs argument. You should be thankful USADA didn't get rid of someone with his potential and skills.

5. You don't like him. We get it. Try to accustom yourself to him being the champ for a long time, otherwise you're going to have a hard time coping.

no, he hasn’t proven his greatness. he is certainly good, but he is still a brand new champ with zero defenses. as is often the case with champions, he is on a long win streak and has looked very good. good for him. but will he lose his next fight? we don’t know, he hasn’t fought yet. will he set a record for defenses, or retire after a mere 3 defenses? we haven’t gotten there yet. and if he proves himself the greatest lw ever, can he do enough to surpass people like gsp to become the goat? those are all questions that should be answered before anyone seriously starts wondering how he does in wrestling.
