Why do people act like poirier is a good boxer?

He's one of the best LW standup fighters of all time and his standup style is... boxing. Nobody thinks Poirier is going to win a belt in professional boxing.
I think he could have won a belt in boxing at one point, they have some scrubs that hold some of those belts.

Cause he outboxed Conor and Max….
He got pieced up and finished in the first fight, he got beat soundly in a pure boxing round until the leg kicks sunk in in the 2nd, and the third was weird cause mcgregor wasn’t fighting normally and initiated grappling

man vs boy, max on 6 weeks notice with love handles, poirier gassed and pushed max against the fence to save himself from getting finished

I don’t think he’s that great at boxing, it’s why he sucks at packaging things due to his block head. His personality is also square. Conononors Peahead is Inside Joe Lee’s dm’s

he is a good mma striker, dont get me wrong

but people here talk about him like he's some great boxer when all he does is blitzes throwing looping hooks

he also has old fedor levels of head hunting, cant throw a body shot to save his life

I seem to remember Fedor punching Big Daddy's guts in before he finished him, but that's just me sir.

You can't compare Dustin against GOD you silly goose.

There was no pure boxing round in Conor vs Dustin 2, but plenty of boxing exchanges. In rd 1 Poirier was kicking in the first 30 sec and landed a td after like one minute of the fight, then they spent a good chunk of time on the cage. In the early boxing exchanges tho Conor looked great and landed more and cleaner, but Dustin also landed check hooks and jabs and was getting more effective as he began to figure out the timing cus of Conor’s one-dimensional approach in that fight, all before Conor’s leg was compromised by the kicks. Fair to say Conor won the early boxing exchanges but not dramatically like vs Nate before gassing and getting boxed up. Conor’s mistake in the fight was coming in w an exclusively boxing style as he was prepping for a boxing match at that time iirc and it cost him cus he wasn’t prepared for the leg kicks.

In their 3rd fight Conor came out throwing kicks and diversifying his striking which was more like vintage Conor, but he got a lil too gung-ho w the kicks trying to prove a point. He only started grappling in rd one immediately after Dustin landed a big overhand then swarmed with punches. It seemed in the third fight that Dustin knew Conor too well at that point and also showed himself that he could take some of Conor’s shots, so he was coming forward with more confidence. IMO Conor overcorrected in this fight by almost exclusively kicking, and Dustin’s hands made him grapple just like Conor tried to grapple Nate after getting wobbled on the feet.

tl;dr if we‘re trying to be as objective as we can, Poirier’s got good boxing in MMA lol

He is good boxer for mma. His results speak for themselves though I must say he did mostly beat nice guy Conor due to calf kick. Against evil dickhead Conor he took him down for most of his succesful work before the leg gave out.

Bruh they been callin dustin a legend 😂😂😂😂

I dont see that as such a laughable take. It depends on how many legends you think yhe sport can host. He's obviously not in the discussion for best of all time, but he's certainly an important figure in the history of mma.

He's fought for the title 3 times, won one (interim), beaten big names/former Champs like Gaethje, Holloway, McGregor, Alvarez and Chandler.

I think he qualifies for legend status, if you use a fairly loose but still reasonable definition of the word legend.

ah man that’s an easy one - it’s cus he is one in terms of adapting and applying a boxing-centric style for MMA. Great defense in 4oz gloves and the ability to counter off of slips/rolls, efficient straight left from distance w unique timing and little windup, good check hook, multi-punch combos, ability to prod and rangefind w his lead hand w/o being too reckless, the ability to stance switch mid combo, really good accuracy while still delivering big power instead of sacrificing too much in either direction.

Think you gotta judge skills as they relate to the sport the athlete has spent their life preparing for.

What mma fighters would you consider good boxers, if any in your opinion? Conor, Max? Cus those experiments have been run

Agreed. I especially like what you said about finding the sweet spot between power and speed/accuracy. Poirier is great at staying busy and stringing together effective combos. He's disciplined and well balanced even when he gets a guy hurt. It's an important skill and he seems to excel in it.

He also seems to maintain his output well through the fight, I can't recall seeing him blow his wad early, or seeing him slow rolling/taking rounds off to save/recover energy.

I don't people mean it in the sense he'd do well as an actual boxer, just that by MMA standards he's got some pretty solid hands.
